AIR SEPARATION UNIT:

Brief History of Air Separation

In 1893, Linde discovered that the liquefication temperature of air can be obtained by means of direct throttling of compressed air as per Joules-Thomson effect, if the temperature of air is sufficiently lowered before expansion by making use of heat exchangers for heat transfer.
In a double column, lower column is designed for working pressure of 5 to 6 ata and top column for 1.5 ata. At the bottom of Lower column, liquid air containing approximately 30 to 40% of Oxygen by volume is collected and this rich liquid is taken to approximately middle of the top column, pure Oxygen Liquid is collected in the condenser. Liquid Oxygen of the upper column is used as a cooling agent to top column is used for further sub cooling the reflux or washing Nitrogen of lower column.
