  • Our History

In 2004 West Park Christian Church will be celebrating 100 years of religious service and influence in the West Side community of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Due to the efforts of neighborhood Christians and the Indianapolis Church Union, the first service was held August 28, 1904.

A large white tent had been erected on Addison Street and fifty people became charter members. Services were held in people's homes as plans were made for a building site. The lot on Addison Street where the tent had been was purchased and the construction of West Park was begun.

Thanksgiving 1905 was celebrated in the half-finished basement of the new church. West Park was dedicated March 4, 1906. The sanctuary and classrooms were added and the building was completed in 1925. Sunday school classes were well attended.

West Park has been a vital part of the West Side community. A city library branch for the area was established at the church in 1907, Boy Scout Troop in 1913. In 1915 the men's class started a community paper which reported religious and neighborhood news.

In 1923, members helped to organize a community center. Members of the board and several men donated lots on which Hawthorne Community is built.

Much of this guidance was provided by Reverend C.G. Baker, a former minister of the Church. West Park worked with other neighbors to establish a local high school and maintained close ties with Washington High School.

In 98 years West Park has survived a horrible depression, four wars, social and neighborhood changes and the loss of School #50.

Survival through such trials came from our dependence and faith in God. With His help…August 28, 2004 Will be a great birthday celebration for West Park!
