Messiah's Secret Appearing
Those who want to teach we can't be perfect until after Messiah returns love to quote this verse, which is extremely amazing to me, because this verse doesn't say what they assert at all. It doesn't say "when he shall appear we shall be made like him," it says we shall "be like him," in other words, we shall "already" be like him. This is because, according to text, "we shall see him as he is." This is where they trip up on the verse. They say, "see there, we won't be like him until we see him as he is." We don't have to wait for Messiah to return to "see him as he is." According to the gospel of John, Messiah promised to "manifest himself to us, but not to the world," prior to his coming, through the Holy Spirit.
If we look again at the letter of 1st John, this is the entire subject of his letter! He's talking all through it about Messiah abiding in us, and we abiding in the Messiah, through the Holy Spirit. Those who say "we can't be like him until we actually see him at his second coming," are completely ignoring the context of the letter. Just before John says this, he says "the anointing which you have received of him abides in you," (chapter 2 verse 27) then he says, "abide in him, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence and not be ashamed," (verse 28) then he says, "everyone that does righteousness is born of him," (verse 29). After this, (chapter 3 verses 1 and 2) he says we are the sons of God and our immortality has not yet appeared to us, but we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him (already) for we shall see him as he is. Then in verse 3 he says:
Then, in verses 4 through 10 he says clearly that anyone who has "seen" Messiah in the Spirit, and "knows Messiah, through the Spirit does not commit sin!
We can "see him," right now, through the Spirit, and this is how he "manifests himself to us but not to the world." This is all done through the Holy Spirit.
How will the angels know the "wheat from the tares?" How will the "sheep and the goats" be separated? According to verse 10, you can tell the differences between the children of the devil and the children of God because the children of God do not commit sin! They keep his commandments.
Most people stop at "believe on the name of his Son" and teach that is all we have to do to satisfy His commandment. It says "and love one another as he gave commandment." Believing on his Son means that we love one another. If we don't learn to love one another by the time of the second coming, it means we are "none of his." We have already discussed that love is the fulfillment of the law. If we love one another we won't sin against one another. Then, in verse 24 he says that if we believe on his Son and keep his love commandment then Messiah dwells in us, and we in him, by the Spirit. Then, in chapter 4, the very next verses, he tells us that anyone who denies the Messiah has come to abide in you, "in the flesh" is that Spirit of antimessiah.
As you can see, those who truly believe, follow Messiah, who have the Holy Spirit, see Messiah as he is long before the world sees Messiah at his second coming. When the world speaks of "seeing Messiah," they are speaking of a physical appearance. When we speak of "seeing Messiah," we speak first of a Spiritual appearing, within us, to transform us into his image, at first in our behavior and doings, and then, at the last trumpet, we shall be translated into his glory through the physical resurrection. We are commanded, one and all, to press into and "hasten" this day of redemption, by mortifying the deeds of the body through the Spirit. May God have mercy on the soul of the one who scoffs at this, and turns their back on the clear light of truth, and walks in the flesh, and sees these things only as the world sees them. For such an one, Messiah comes as a thief, and will appear to them only when he appears to the world, and Messiah comes to judge the world! Friends and brethren, the time is short. Repent, for the day of the master is at hand. Yahweh bless and keep you, IN HIS LOVE. Shalom J. Dean |
