INTERVIEWS

Here are a few interviews with Tom. We'll be adding more interviews every so often so keep checking back! It’s not all one big interview; it’s lots of smaller one’s but we’ve put them all together on one page to make it easier to read! Anyway, here they are!

Q: How did you prepare for the role of Draco?

Tom: I practised facial expressions, and I snarled like a wolf. And I used to think about things to get me angry. I have three older brothers so I did a lot of thinking back to when I was younger. Also, I just think of Draco and he gets me in the right mood. He just keeps getting worse and worse.

Q: Do you think that Harry and Draco will ever be friends?

Tom: Hopefully not, because it'd ruin my part! Ha ha. Obviously I don’t know, but I can’t really see it happening in the future.

Q:Do you believe in ghosts?

Tom: Oooh, spooky. I believe in ghosts, yes, but magic maybe not..

Q: What was the best thing about making the film?

Tom: Finishing it was good - it was a relief to see it all over and it’s then very exciting to come back and see it when it's finished. I think working with everyone else is the best thing - working with all these famous actors and realising that they're just normal people who've got an incredible talent.

Q: What was it like working with such great actors?

Tom: Richard Harris (who plays Headmaster Dumbledore) and Maggie Smith (who plays Professor McGonagall) are great. I was nervous around Robbie Coltrane (who plays Hagrid) at first; I didn't want to say anything. But then we became friends.

Q: Was there anything on the set that you wanted to take home?

Tom: I would've taken my wand. It was really cool. It was a bit of a wavy sort of shape.

Q: Is it more fun playing a baddie?

Tom: Yes, and as the story continues, the books get a lot darker. I like it, yeah.

Q: How are you different from Malfoy?

Tom: He's very mean. To be honest, I am not that mean. I think he's jealous, and he wants to be the coolest guy in school.

Q: Do you prefer to play a bad or good character?

Tom: Bad. It's more fun because it's different.

Q: What kind of spell would you love to cast on someone?

Tom: I'd make their legs stick together so wherever the person went, they would fall over.

Q: What magical power would you most want to have?

Tom: Invisibility. So I could sneak around and go places I shouldn't.

Q: What sort of character is Draco?

Tom: Draco's not really a bully. He's not exactly the biggest, strongest guy in the world. He's more a rich, snobby person. He thinks of himself as really cool.

Q: Do you get along with the other children in real life?

Tom: Yeah. We get along really well. The moment we met we just clicked.

Q:How is Malfoy different in this movie?

Tom: I'm a lot nastier. I decided after watching the first one that I wasn't nasty enough.

Q: What is it like playing such a nasty person?

Tom: It's more fun. Personally, I prefer it. It's different from how I normally am.

Q: What was the hardest scene for you to do?

Tom: I found Quidditch quite tough. It's hard to imagine that you're racing on a broomstick and chasing a magic golden ball when you're actually in front of a big blue screen. But I got used to it after a while.

Q: Do you think acting will be your career when you get older?

Tom: No, I don't. My plan is to do acting until I'm sixteen, then travel for a year, fishing with my brother. I want to go to fishery management college. My brother went there, and I've decided to go as well.

Q: How do you relax after a long day of working on the set?

Tom: I go home and watch an hour of The Simpsons.

Q: Which house at Hogwarts would you like to be in?

Tom: Oh, Slytherin all the way. Gryffindor is too goody-goody. I couldn't go to Hogwarts and stick to all the rules. Having a wand would be too useful to keep in your pocket. I couldn't help myself from using it!

Q: What’s it like going to school now that you’re famous?

Tom: I really like school and I miss it a lot when I’m filming. I miss all my friends, too. I’ve got some idea what I want to do for my GCSE’s. I’ll definitely do music.

Q: What were the funniest moments on set?

Tom: That's the question everyone asks! So much of it happened, I can never remember. But most of it is to do with Dan. I think it's because he's there the most, and he has to keep himself entertained by playing jokes. Like taking our phones and changing them to Turkish, stuff like that.

Q: Do you like seeing the film?

Tom: You have to watch it a few times before you realise that's actually you up there. When you make it, it feels like you’re doing the same thing, when they keep saying "look here, look there" or whatever. But then you see it on the screen and it all comes together. And some stuff you don't even remember doing!

Did you find the film frightening?

Tom: (laughs) Too right! I'm supposed to be the dark, hard man of the film and I found it scary - snakes jumping out and massive spiders!

Q: So you're not really a bad person?

Tom: No. Well, it all depends, doesn't it? (laughs) No, not really. I try to save all the anger up till we're actually on camera, so that Draco looks better.

Q: What did you do in between filming?

Tom: I'd be down in the games room, or eating! One good thing about the Harry Potter cloaks was that they had huge pockets. You could fill them up full of food and drink. The people in Wardrobe started complaining after a while and they started sewing the pockets up!

Q: Do you enjoy premieres?

Tom: Oh, how can you not enjoy it, it's great! At the first one, I didn't realise how big a thing it was until I got out of the car, and I saw everyone. I must have looked so miserable - I was too nervous to smile! For the second one i felt more prepared, and I thought I knew what to expect. I got out and there were easily four times as many people as the first time. I like to talk to fans if I can, to show them i'm an ordinary person and that I don't have any power over them, I'm just in a film!

Q:What's the secret to being able to laugh or cry on cue?

Tom: There's always something on set to laugh at! To act upset, I think of cold things... don't ask me why!

Q: Which room or set did you most like to work in?

Tom: I loved the Slytherin common room. It had weird walls that shimmered as if they were under water.

Q: You play a villain in the Harry Potter movies. Who are your favorite movie villains?

Tom: I thought that Alan Rickman was brilliant in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the one with Kevin Costner.

Q: He plays professor Snape in the Harry Potter movies. What is he like to work with?

Tom: He's a very nice bloke! He's very clever in his own way- a very smart man.

Q: What was your favorite scene to film in this movie?

Tom: I like the dueling club scene, where Daniel and I fight with our wands. I thought it was a brilliant scene to shoot. I think the end product looked really good.

Q: How does Draco change in the second film?

Tom: You see another side of Draco when he's with his dad. When Draco is with his dad, he doesn't say anything. He keeps his mouth shut. He's sort of bullied by his dad, so he acts very different.

Q: Have you traveled a lot for the premiers and promotions? Where have you gone that you really liked?

Tom: Yeah. My favorite country is America. I love going there! Me and my family went to Orlando, Florida, for 10 days to the theme parks and the beaches. It was nice.

Q: What do you most like to do when you're not filming Harry Potter?

Tom: Fishing. I go in the local lake near where I work on Sundays. It's called Berry Hill.

Q: There are a lot of animals in the film. Which were your favourites?

Tom: I really liked the snake that breaks out of the cage in the beginning of the [first] movie. I saw it in real life and it was really cool. Really big and fat. The owls are cool as well, but you can't really pet them.

Q: How did you change your image for the film?

Tom: Slicking back my hair was Chris's idea. It was meant to be kind of waved back and kind of browny-blondy. My hair is normally that length, but not slicked back. I wear it forward. Course, the face is the same!

Q: If you could cast a spell on someone, who would it be?

Tom: My brother, cos sometimes he's annoying, but that's what brother's are for really, so yeah, my brother.

Q: If you could bring anything from the world of Harry Potter into the real world, what would it be?

Tom: Brooms. And a wand.

Q:What do you think of your new-found popularity, especially amongst girls? Have you seen any of the fan sites on the internet dedicated to you?

Tom: I can't say I have, I'll have to look into that. I never get to meet any of the people so it's not really as big as I would have hoped really. But it's mad when you go out to a premier, places like that, the people are unbelievable - they're really into the film and do anything for you to come over and talk to them - it's madness.

Q: Do you not think of yourself as a bit of a heartthrob?

Tom: Well I'd rather not say but no, not really, just Tom.

Q: I've heard you can sing - have you ever thought of going into the music industry?

Tom: Definitely not! I don't sing and I'm not going to release a single, nothing like that. I'm afraid I do not sing.

You've never sung in choirs?

Tom: I was very, very young, very young. [at this point he looked a bit embarrassed, bless his lil cotton socks!]

Q: How did you get on with Dan Radcliffe, who of course plays Harry, do you get on well with him or are you enemies off screen?

Tom: We hate each other - no we're friends really because we're on camera about half an hour a day, of course all the other times we're off, so more time being friends than enemies... But when it comes to the cameras rolling I hate him and I show my anger!!

Q: Have you managed to keep anything from the set of the film?

Tom: I managed to get one thing - my Slytherin tie - that's from the first one, not the second one. I asked them if I could have that and they of course had loads of them because of the extras and they said yeah.

Q: Do you wear it to school?

Tom: I don't as such, but mufti day's coming up so I'll wear it for that!

Q: Were there any good pranks on set?

Tom: So many, that I couldn't tell you any really - every five minutes there was something - there was always something going on, there was always a thing with eyelines - offset eyelines - people always stick up little posters of people or whatever, like Cameron Diaz and it was with different girls every week and all sorts of funny faces or whatever.

Q: How much gel do you have to put on your hair to get that flat plastered look?

Tom: Yes I'm glad someone's finally asked that! My head's been plastered with the stuff - I use a pot a day, half in the morning just to get it all waxed up and of course by the time you walk around it sort of just breaks off and they slab on another ton of the stuff. Awful really.

Q: Have you got any tips for people who want to get into the movies?

Tom: It's one of those things that the more I sort of tried to do it, the more I went on interviews, the more I tried to get the part the less - if I just relaxed and made them laugh and just sort of treated them like normal that seemed to do the trick. If you're desperate to get it you're never going to achieve it.

Q: You've been acting since you were very young. How has the success from the Harry Potter films changed your life?

Tom: It's changed it in a very subtle way. It's just that you realize that people are going to recognize you more and more.

Q: Is it strange when people recognize you?

Tom: Yeah, it’s a bit weird when you’re out and about and people recognize you. I’ve been at events where people are booing and hissing when I come on but I’m pretty used to it now.

Q: Do kids come up to you and say mean things about Draco?

Tom: Yes, a few of them do, but it's not too bad.

Q: Those films will be around for a long time to come. How does that feel?

Tom: It hasn't sunk in yet. It probably will in 20 years time - we'll realise then what a big thing it really was. Till then it's just Harry Potter, it’s massive and it's lots of fun just to be part of it.
