Just imagine riding your bike on Lake Shore Drive while breathing in fresh air instead of exhaust, and being able to take your time soaking up the stunning views of the city! Bike The Drive offered a unique opportunity to enjoy the Chicago skyline as Lake Shore Drive was closed to cars — and opened to bikes.
I had a chance to particapate in the event, as did my wife and niece. I did the 30 mile tour while they did just the 15 mile tour. The ride began at Grant Park in downtown Chicago. From there, it went as far south as 57th Street, where we turned around at the Museum of Science and Industry. After stopping for refreshments and a 5 to 10 minute rest, it was time to head back north, where Grant Park was the finishing point for those doing the 15 mile ride.
For those doing the 30 mile ride, the ride continued north on Lake Shore Drive to the north turn-around point, Hollywood Blvd. Once again refreshments awaited weary riders. After resting for a few minutes, the ride then headed back south on the Drive, finishing at Grant Park, where a post ride festival was taking place, well at least until the torrential downpour began.
