Week 5 Highlights
Monday
It was the sizzling hot beginning of the fifth week of the Summer Bridge.
Two Summer Bridge students are smiling as they make their way toward the air conditioned Theater Lecture Center.
A change of plans! Due to a speaker's schedule conflict the Summer Bridge students are to be shown a movie in the large lecture hall 250 BSB, which is directly across Harrison Street. Upon reading the sign....

they find their way into lecture hall 250 BSB...
and join the steadily increasing group of students already in the room.
More and more students find seats in the hall, until all are present.
Technological wizard Nubia is at the controls of the audio visual computer equipment, waiting for the request to begin the film.
Dr. Erica Davila welcomes the students and gives an explanation for the change in the schedule. She gives a brief introduction to the movie they are about to see...
the true story of a talented but troubled human being, whose gifts were many but whose problems were more numerous.
The movie showed a view of the range of the subject's life experiences -- from prison depths, to society's accolades, back to the shackles of drugs, and finally death.
After the movie the students were allowed a few minutes of personal time.
The English instructor compared notes, preparing for the upcoming discussion session.
During the pause the students were asked to sign-in with their Math Instructors.
Erica and Isaura lead the discussion, asking pointed questions and receiving well thought out answers.
The session was brought to a close and the students make their way out of the lecture hall. Math Instructor Alicia shares a few words of advice to her students as they walked out.
The last of the students head for the exits and another Monday session has concluded.
Tuesday
Terry's 9AM and 10:30AM classes were given a math quiz. Here we see the 9AM students concentrating on the problems they were given. Although not pictured, the 10:30AM class worked just as hard.
Thursday
The math classes had problem worksheets to practice on. Below are some pictures of some students from Terry's 9AM class.
Ralph is deep in thought, formulating a plan of attack for a tricky problem.
Alma, Susanna, Delores, and Ralph pause for a photo opportunity.
Annette and Jessica each give a big smile for the camera. Immediately after they were back at work.
Surprise Visitor!!!
Former Summer Bridge student Hector Cano makes a surprise appearance. Hector graduated from UIC a few years ago, after which he went on to earn an advanced degree from The University of Chicago. Hector has never forgotten LARES or the Summer Bridge and regularly volunteers his time to help the current crop of Summer Bridge students. Thank you, Hector!!!
After Hector left it was back down to business for the 10:30AM class. Here we see the students busy with a math quiz.
The fifth week is finished. One week to go. How fast time flies......
