but the beauty of nature is everwhere on the UIC campus.
The Summer Bridge Monday sessions meet in the UIC Theater Building. Here we see two of the students looking at the Theater sign.
Clusters of students wait for the doors to open. To the casual observer this scene is nothing special but a Summer Bridge veteran notices the dispersion of the student clusters. This is due to the fact that the students are new and have not made many acquaintances yet. In three weeks this same view will have most of the students gathered together, chatting about class work and sharing other information.
The doors were opened a few minutes before 9AM and the students filed in and found comfortable seats.
In the dim distance we see Luis Duarte in conversation with Summer Bridge English Instructor Mitzi Ramos and Math Instructor Antonio Vasquez.
Luis Duarte called the session to order. He talked about the University of Illinois at Chicago, the LARES program , and the expectations the LARES staff has for the Summer Bridge students.
The students listened intently to the words offered by Luis.
Next Luis introduced Hugo Teruel, Assistant Director of LARES.
Members of the Summer Bridge instruction staff introduced themselves and talked about their classes. After the talking was done the students were sent out on a scavenger hunt. The purpose of the hunt is to make students visit a variety of campus offices and facilities. This knowledge will be invaluable during their first weeks of school, and beyond.
Here we see some members of the first team to return with all the information found during the scavenger hunt.
After all the teams returned the program was concluded and the students were allowed to leave.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, the work begins!
