Screaming by Beth Sheehan

The stars coming toward me
on the black computer screen
get bigger and explode in my face
theyre becoming blurry now
and I can almost make out
a butterfly pattern
in the erupting splotches
and I SCREAM

AND WHY CANT YOU THINK
about anything clearly?
WHY CANT YOU BELIEVE
in anyone you need?
WHY CANT YOU SLEEP
to dream about dreaming?
AND WHY CANT YOU SPEAK
in words worth hearing?

And I sit in my unyielding
dorm room desk chair
and try to write something
about me, but dont know
myself well enough to think
about who I really want to be
And I SCREAM

AND WHY CANT YOU THINK
of a life worth living?
WHY CANT YOU BELIEVE
in a world worth giving?
WHY CANT YOU SLEEP
to rest your grieving?
WHY CANT YOU SPEAK
do you believe in anything?

And the room is cold
and the buildings asleep
and I want to leap
into the dark sky
and live in the stars
and ride on the wings
of the butterflies---
and I SCREAM
