I'm going to start posting some of my writings here, both fiction and nonfiction. They are in no particular order than the first ones to go up are the ones that I remembered and liked enough to post first. OK, I can't live without order. Within each section the pieces are arranged chronologically. Also, I finally got tired of the .pdf files, so from now on I'm going to start posting Word documents.
Also, please note that some of my pieces were written for newspaper classes, in which I sometime had to write from the point of view of a different opnion than I actually held. Also, some of these pieces are a couple of years old, and I may not even hold the same opinions. So, basically, if you have a problem with what I write, please inform me in a civil manner so we can discuss it as adults. I have no time or patience for anyone who flings profanities or judgments - act like a grown-up, moron.
FICTION
- Horoscopes
- Yes, I managed to sneak a work of fiction into the yearbook. I did this because, as any editor of Academics and Residence Halls sections knows, there's absolutely nothing to put into those sections. In desperation, I came up with this. People seemed to like it.
- I Ran Away With Bigfoot
- This was one of the exercises for my creative writing class back at Purdue. I don’t remember what the actual assignment was, but I was trying to showcase my ability to mimic another writer. There’s a story, written from the point of view of a man who is certain his wife left him for Bigfoot, by Ron Carlson. You can read it here. My instructor said I did a good job, although I wasn’t sure, since at the time this was written I had only heard the story aloud and didn’t have it in front of me for comparison.
NONFICTION
- Response to Wicker
- This piece was written after going to a lecture by Tom Wicker, a journalist and novelist. I can't remember what the lecture was about, so you have to guess based on what my piece says.
- SCA
- God, this sucks. Was going through a "I want to write but I don't want to have to talk to any sources" phase.
- Sydney Olympics
- I wrote this for the Arbutus, IU's yearbook. Yes, it is as hard as you think it is to get in touch with an Olympic athlete.
ACADEMIC PAPERS
- Modeling Survival in a Population of Bannertail Kangaroo Rats Using Data from a
Portal, Arizona Study Site
- In the spring of 2000, I made a valiant attempt to interact with my professors and do some independent study research. I ended up working for this guy who was studying kangaroo rats in Arizona. Besides learning how to trap and handle kangaroo rats, I learned that just because someone took a CS class doesn't mean that said person can write a computer program to model population growth. I still to this day don't understand why he didn't just use Vortex, but this was my attempt at using DBASE III (which I had never used before) to create the program. Any programmers out there can feel free to let me know where I fucked up, since they always ended up dying off.
