To livejournal or not to livejournal, that is the question. Seems that that is the place to be nowadays. If I go to all that trouble, do I have time to blog? Do I even want to blog? Who really cares about it? I need a sign.

Holy crap, I live!

I could spend time updating you on life's events, but you don't really care, do you? So I'll leave you with three things: the knowledge that I spent two months writing a $2+ million grant, which resulted in not only the grant application but a two-month backlog of other work; that apparently, the idea in Aruba is that if they keep arresting people, they will eventually find the perpetrator of a crime; and puppy pictures.

Started the new job with the County. Since the job didn't start until last week, I spent two weeks working at AM General through Flint. I had to get up every day at 3:30 a.m., but the pay was good and the people were great to work with. They even sent me flowers my last day. Awwww....

At the new job, I've spent the majority of my time reading. And reading. And reading some more. I apparently can't do much of anything until I get certified, and that won't happen until December. So as far as I can tell, my job for the next few weeks is to read, check my e-mail for important work messages, and administer the shit out of the grant. Today, my computer died, making e-mail checking pretty much impossible. Lucky we're getting new computers.

Oh, and R.I.P., O.D.B.

You know in movies or TV when there will be someone doing something boring in the foreground, but the real action is happening in the background? I'm sitting here watching the ND game, and every now and then I'll see Snarf run by the sliding door. Each time she runs by she has a progressively larger piece of wood in her mouth. She's up to log-you-would-put-on-fire size. I think she's building a secret wood-cabin lair out there.

In other news, I'm unemployed. This should be only temporary, as my job at the County should start by the end of the month. However, my ex-boss decided it was time to replace me with a cake and a smile. OK, that sounded wrong. There is not currently a cake sitting at the desk I used to occupy. I hope you know what I meant.

So, the ex-boss was suddenly in a rush to replace me, gave me only a day to train my replacement, and didn't talk to me about my employment options like she said she would. What, me, bitter? Noooooo. But at least I'm no longer working for someone who watches me all the time, gets upset when I'm proactive without discussing with her first, and gets upset when I'm not proactive because I should have been proactive in the first place. She also still hasn't fixed the computer I used, from what I've heard, and was shocked to find out that it hadn't been fixed yet. Guess that was something I was supposed to be proactive on. Oops.

The new job should be interesting. I'm apparently going to be the "lead program coordinator" for the County. Not sure what that's going to entail yet. Details to come.

Neil and I have a puppy now! Here's a picture:

Her name is Snarf, after the character from Thundercats. She's very sweet, although I'm now in housetraining hell. She actually has a personality similar to our cat's, in that she's very needy and is disinterested in her food.

Allllllllrighty, then, been a bit of a gap between my updates. I was Internet-less for most of May and June. Neil and I bought a house and moved at the end of April. It's a very nice house, with lots of space, and we had to buy a couch and take Emily's coffee table to help fill it. We're mostly moved in now, and we have a cable modem, so life is good. I almost have a new job, too. More details on that later. Of course, I chose to try and update when I have to be at Great Wall in 20 minutes and I still have to change. Lucky that Great Wall is now about 5 minutes away. :)

So, remember in my last update when I said we were getting a new engine in our car, and hopefully that would be the end of our car follies for a while? Well, apparently the powers that be gave a giant "mua-ha-ha" to that, as I managed to get into a car accident with the newly-engined car less than two weeks after getting it back. Don't worry, everyone's OK. But the car is back in the shop for repairs.

In other news, Neil and I have bought a house! We will be living about three houses down from Brad and Mary, meaning that Mary and I will never see our husbands again. The house is a 3-bedroom ranch with a fenced back yard. No word yet on move-in date.

Not much else going on besides that. Just work, really.

Hey, guess what? I still live!

So what's happened in the last two-ish weeks? Glad you asked! I turned 26 on Friday the 13th. Laura left us to return to Colorado. I got a job. And our Chrysler LeBaron died. R.I.P., couch car.

I'm working for a temp agency, doing front-desk-person work. I'm not entirely sure what my title is, guessing it's Administrative Assistant, as in my file I saw that someone noted "Coming in to discuss Administrator position." Basically, I answer phones, get potential employees set up with applications and testing, send faxes, and file. Oh yeah, and I have to track down references. Damn you, references! I spend way too much of my week verifying that people don't suck. Know what does suck, though? Our office being 80 DEGREES today. I've gone home completely nauseous the last two days because of the near-unbearable hotness. Hopefully this is not a "the JMS building has heating and cooling issues so deal with it" problem.

As for the car, I believe the problem had to do with something called the cam shaft and something about it being sheared in two. Not worth fixing, so we're getting our broke-down Saturn a spankin' new engine. So we are single-carred for about two weeks. I can only hope this will be the end of our car follies for a while.

I'd also like to add that I'm completely addicted to roleplaying. All you fanatics who say roleplaying is of the devil, may you be smote where you stand.

Buy me something.

I've been productive, and put up some pictures from our wedding.

First, a shout out of congrats to Neil, who has been accepted to Notre Dame's law school for this fall. Woohoo!

I still completely suck in the finding a job department. Tomorrow I'm going to buckle down and see if I can't find me some employment. I also need to put together a portfolio of my writing and minimal graphic design stuff should I get an interview at the advertising agency, which as far as I can tell is the happiest place on earth. As an aside, I'm fairly certain I heard one of their graphic designers win something on the radio last week.

I think it's time to talk resolutions, since January is now over, and I'm nothing if not a procrastinator. I'm no longer a student, so if I want to improve myself in any way or learn anything new, it's got to be on my own time. Which is good, because I can choose what I want to learn. But it's also bad, since I'm at least personally notorious for not following through on personal improvement promises. I always feel like I have this jinx where if I mention to someone that I want to do something, then there's no chance I'm going to do it. I was proud of myself last month for telling people I was going to send Mikey J (who's stationed in Somethingstan) a birthday package, and actually did so.

So, what do I want to do with myself this year? I have the following modest list, in no particular order:

  • Reach my target weight through diet and exercise. I lost 25 pounds last year, and if I can do it again this year I'll be about there.
  • Write. As in, actually get stories written, not just floating around in my head. A corollary to this is to get something published.
  • Spend more quality time with Neil, since I won't see him once he starts law school.
  • Learn how to draw people. Just something I've always wanted to do.
  • Start learning a martial art.
  • Whatever permanent job I get, make sure that I do something on the side related to the academic degree I'm not using. For example, if I was to work for the advertising agency, I would then want to do something in the environmental science field, such as volunteering for the DNR.
  • Read every book ever written by Robert A. Heinlein.
  • Be an informed voter in the 2004 presidential election.
  • Work on breaking my "jinx" by actually doing some of the stuff on this list.

  • So, that all seems somewhat daunting. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Wow, lots going on. Yes, I'm still alive, I just haven't gotten around to updating. Today I was productive, as I cleaned all the downstairs and did laundry. Before that, I went to the viewing for Brad's grandfather, who died Wednesday evening. There were a lot of people there... he was a much loved and respected man.

I've also just learned that Rob and Hannah broke up... and he complains that we never keep him updated with stuff. It's sad, since I liked Hannah a lot, but Rob said it was for the best.

I am still somewhat jobless, although I sent a résumé to an advertising agency and they called me back, and I also got calls from Sears and a temp agency, so here's hoping.

Also, Laura is leaving us next month, going back to Colorado. So I'm sad, because I'm going to miss her, and wish I had spent more time with her while she was here.

And, finally, I am so good at Pictionary that I have been banned. I have the amazing ability to draw better with my eyes closed than open.

    1-08-04
It's been over a month since I updated, and things aren't really much different, except it's a new year and I have the sniffles. I'm now weirding out on cold medicine, so I claim no responsibility for what I write from this point on. I still have no permanent job; I'm currently working for an inventory company, since I suck and can't find a job. But I did have a job interview on Monday, although it was for a job I'm not really qualified for (microbiology) and I don't think the guy is going to hire me because of that. But at least I got an interview.
