LONGSTOWN and KEYSTONE

The Prospectors and C’s matched up in the opening round of the playoffs. Longstown throws Alvarez against Keystones Hamels. In the home 1st, leadoff hitter Inciarte is the recipient of a Donaldson throwing error, Grandal follows with an RBI Double and with 2 outs, Pence singles home Grandal for a quick 2 – 0 lead. In the top of the 3rd with 2 out Donaldson hits a solo dinger to cut the keystone lead in half. Grandal leads off the home half of the inning with a shot to Espinosa at 2nd that is bobbled and Grandal reaches 1st on Longstown’s second error of the game. SPARROW LAKE and CREEKSIDE

Game 1

Buehrle for SL against King Felix for Creekside. The aces of both teams lived up to their billing as no one threatened for three innings. Top of the 4th Brett Gardner went the other way with a Felix change up and deposited it in the left field stands for a Sparrow Lake 1-0 lead. Buerle tired and was pulled after 5 great innings giving up only a single by Wright in the 3rd and a triple by Span right after Wright was gunned down trying to steal. Dyson came on in the 6th and Jayson Werth touched him for a long ball to tie the game at 1-1.  Felix settled in and went 8 solid innings giving up the one run on six hits. Joe Beimel came on to pitch the 9th, giving up a one out walk to Gardner but Arencibia hit into the 6-4-3 dp. Jennings came out for the bottom of the 9th against the middle of the Creekside order, he got Werth on a called strike three and got Abreu to ground out harmlessly but he left one on the inner half to Rizzo and Rizzo did not miss it. Game 2

Samardzija for SL against Simon for Creekside. A carbon copy of game one as hits were indeed at a premium. Creekside had chances early as Abreu laced a two out 2B but was stranded in the 1st. A leadoff 2B by Negron in the 2nd  went for naught as well. Finally in the 6th, Werth led off with a bomb for a 1-0 Creekside lead. Simon continued his great pitching of the regular season as he did not give up a hit until one out in the 8th when Neil Walker doubled to right center. Melancon came on to pitch the 9th in hopes of another save which were pretty automatic all year, but not today. Turner and Van Slyke both singled to start the 9th, Paulsen popped out but Cabrera came thru with the clutch single that scored Turner with the tie run and Van Slyke advanced to third. The key at bat was Castro, and Melancon jammed him and got a slow roller back to the mound. He threw Castro out at first with Cabrera moving to second and Van Slyke holding at third. JMolina came to the plate in a big spot, he had replaced Arencibia earlier who was pinch hit for, and he lofted a harmless fly to right field. Bottom of the 9th was eerily similar to the previous game as Thornton came on for Sparrow Lake and handled Ruggiano with a K and Suarez with a ground out to second but he didn't fool Brandon Phillips who hit a first pitch fastball down the line just inside the foul pole for the game winner.   FINAL  2-1 Creekside

 Game 3

Fister for Creekside vs Kennedy for Sparrow Lake.

Creekside comes out of the gate quick for a change as Span draws a leadoff BB is moved on to second and then third with two ground outs. Rizzo cashes him in with a single to left and is then thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. CRK 1-0.

Calhoun takes Fister deep to leadoff the bottom of the second to tie things at 1-1.

Sparrow Lake takes a 2-1 lead in the 4th as Castro doubles to leadoff and then Gardner came thru with a clutch two out double to plate the go ahead run.  SL 2-1.

In the 7th Abreu goes deep to tie things but in the bottom half Arencibia goes deep as well to give the lead back to Sparrow Lake.  3-2 SL

Top of the 9th against Andrew Miller, Abreu goes yard again to tie the score at 3-3.

Creekside had a golden opportunity against Dyson in the 10th as Suarez led off with a single and Phillips drew a walk. David Wright followed with a sac to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out. Span then flied to medium right field and Suarez was gunned down at the plate by Markakis

In the 11th Creekside got two runners on but could not get the big hit and then in the bottom of the 11th Cabrera took a Beimel offering into the bullpen in right field to end things.   FINAL 4-3 SL

Game 4

Hernandez for Creekside vs Buehrle for Sparrow Lake

Reminiscent of the first two games, hits come at a premium.

All zeros til the 5th, when with one out Suarez walks, Phillips singles and David Wright doubles down the line to score two Off of Buehrle.  CRK 2-0

Hernandez had it on cruise control for much of this game but was nicked for an unearned run in the 7th as Castro reached on an error to Suarez and then Calhoun cranked one off the wall in center to cut the lead in half.  CRK 2-1.

With Melancon on in the 9th, Van Slyke leads off with a single but Cabrera bounced into the 6-4-3 DP, and Calhoun grounded out harmlessly to end it.

Game 5

Simon for Creekside vs Samardzjia for Sparrow Lake

What else is new, yet another pitchers duel. SL strikes in the 3rds as Markakis hit a no-doubter into the bleachers in right for SL lead. SL 1-0

In the 4th SL pads their lead as Van Slyke leads off with a single off of the tiring Simon, he move to second on a fielders choice and then steals 3rd.

Castro walks to put runners at the corners and the Calhoun come thru with a key two out single to score a huge insurance run, which as it turned out was not really needed as Creekside

fails to get in the scoring column off of Samardzija who went the distance for a 2-0 shutout

Game 6

A re-play of the game 3 matchup.

Fister for Creekside vs Kennedy foe Sparrow Lake

Creekside gets to Kennedy early in this one, with one out in the 1st Werth and Abreu get back-to-back doubles to take a 1-0 lead.

Not much of anything thru 6 innings, in fact Sparrow Lake is still looking for their first hit off of Fister.

However, the Sparrow Lake bats came to life in the top of the 7th. Cabrera leads off with a ringing double and is plated by a Castro base hit. After a Calhoun strike out, Walker goes yard to give SL a 3-1 lead.

Creekside tried to rally in the bottom half with the help of some wildness by Jennings. Werth, Werth moved up on a g was pitched carefully and drew a leadoff walk. Werth moved up to second on a ground out, Rizzo followed

with a walk as well and both moved up on another ground out. Ruggiano was then intentionally walked to load the bases to face Suarez with two outs. who flied out meekly to center.  SL  3-1 after 7 innings

Sparrow Lake hitters were back at it again in the 8th as Turner lined a single to center and Van Slyke followed with a blast into the seats in left off of Beimel. SL 5-1

The way this series is going, a 4 run lead is next to insurmountable, and it pretty much was. Creekside got a couple runners on in the 9th with a Suarez walk and a Phillips single but David Wright bounced into a game ending DP

FINAL  5-1 SL

WP - Jennings   Sv - Miller

LP - Fister

SL      5-5-0

CRK   1-5-1

Game 7 - Hernandez for Creekside vs Buehrle for SL

Sudden death.  The best game of the series, as neither team wanted their season to end. Hard fought to the bitter end as both teams had multiple chances to take charge of this game but the pitching came thru time and again in big spots.

Both offenses did some damage as well which was something different this series especially Creekside who I don't think ever had more than a one run lead at any point in the series.

Top of the 1st

Turner gets aboard on an error to David Wright and he scores on a 2B by Van Slyke, Cabrera grounded out but Castro came thru with a clutch two out single to plate the second run of the inning.

Bottom of the 1st

Creekside goes down in order

SL 2-0

Top of the 2nd

Arencibia cracks a one out 2B and scores on a solid single by Markakis, making it 3-0 SL

Bottom of the 2nd

Creekside responds, with two outs Lucroy doubled, Ruggiano walked and Suarez ties it with a 3-run bomb. Phillips followed with a single but Buehrle who seemed to be injured got Span 1-3..

After 2 innings TIED 3-3

Top of the 3rd

With two outs Calhoun drew a walk off of Hernandez, who obviously does not have his best stuff but is hanging tuff, and Walker singles but Hernandez gets Gardner to ground out to end the inning.

Bottom of the 3rds

Otero is brought in to face the middle of the Creekside order. Wert and Abreu both bounce out second to first. But Otero leaves one out over the plate to Rizzo who does not miss it and gives Creekside a 4-3 lead.

CRK 4-3

Top of the 4th

Markakis strokes a double down the right field line with one out, Turner draws a BB and the runners move up to 2nd and 3rd on a Van Slyke ground out. Cabrera is intentionally passed and Hernandez gets Castro on a fly to Span in center.

Bottom of the 4th

Creekside goes down in order off of Thornton.

CRK 4-3

Top of the 5th

Hernandez continues to struggle as he lets one in the middle of the plate to Calhoun who ties the game with a bomb to the cheap seats.

Bottom of the 5th

Nothing off of Thornton again.

TIE 4-4 after 5

Top of the 6th

Best inning of the game for Hernandez he strikes out two in this frame.

Bottom of the 6th

Jennings enters the game for Sparrow Lake but promptly throws a wide one to 1st on a grounder by Abreu who take second on the miscue. Rizzo moves the runner along with a ground out, Negron who is playing for Wright come thru with a

solid single and steals 2nd as well but he is left out there when Lucroy and Ruggiano bounce out to third.

CRK 5-4

Top of the 7th

Cabrera draws another walk off of Hernandez, his fourth of the day to this point. To make matters worse he hits Castro putting runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Calhoun bounces out 5-3 but runners move to 2nd and 3rd. Walker is

intentionally walked and in typical Hernandez fashion, he rises to the occasion when his team needed him most by striking out both Gardner and Arencibia.

Bottom of the 7th

Phillips draws a one out BB off of Jennings but is wiped out by a DP off the bat of Denard Span.

CRK 5-4

Top of the 8th

Hoping to get one more inning out of their ace Felix finds himself in deep trouble again. Markakis leads off with a single, Hernandez gets Turner with a nasty change up for the first out. Van Slyke singles Markakis to third and Van Slyke steals second

to really put the pressure on. Again Creekside plays the odds, hoping to induce a dp by intentionally walking Cabrera . Similar top the previous inning Hernandez shows why he one of the best by striking out both Castro and Calhoun. It's obvious that Hernandez is spent and will need to be pulled. He got by in this game on sheer guile and his will to win. But he is thru for the game. 8 amazing innings that his team needed desperately.

Bottom of the 8th

Andrew Miller is on for Sparrow Lake and Werth and Abreu are overmatched as he blows them away with ease, Rizzo does manage to get wood on the ball but bounces out 6-3.

CRK 5-4

Top of the 9th

Melancon is on for Creekside hoping to finih it out and send Creekside to the next round. He must have had his thoughts on the post game buffet instead of who he was facing because Neil Walker centered up a fastball and tied the game at 5's.

Bottom of the 9th

With Miller still in the game Negron, Lucroy and Ruggiano all go down on strikes. The good news is Miller is done.

TIED 5-5

Top of the 10th

Creekside spins the wheel and tries to get a second inning out of Melancon, who rarely ever goes more than one. Turner goes down swinging but then Van Slyke cracks a booming 3B off the top of the wall in center. Cabrera is intentionally walked for what has to be a playoff record third time in this game. Castro grounds slowly to Negron at third who has to take the out at 1st as Cabrera gets himself into scoring position. With second and third with 2 outs they decide to put Calhoun on to pitch to Walker with the bases loaded. The strategy works as Neil Walker goes down swinging.

Bottom of the 10th

Dyson now on for Sparrow Lake and he gets Suarez, Phillips and Span in order.

TIED 5-5

Top of the 11th

Uehara now on for Creekside. He manages to get Gardner, Arencibia, and Markakis in order for only the second time in this game.

Bottom of the 11th

With Dyson on for his second inning, Werth greets him with a leadoff 2B. Dyson digs deep and gets Abreu and Rizzo on strikes and Negron on a 6-3 ground out.

TIED 5-5

Top of the 12th

Uehara comes thru with another 1-2-3 inning against the top of the Sparrow Lake order, finishing it off with a Cabrera strike out.

Bottom of the 12th

The seventh pitcher is on for Sparoow Lake as Hawkins is on for his first appearance in the series. Lucroy grounds out 5-3 but Ruggiano and Suarez come thru with consecutive singles. Ruggiano went to third on the single and Suarez steals second with only one out. Phillips is walked intentionally in hopes of something good happening. The Sparrow Lake prayers are answered as Denard Span, who has had a horrible series grounds into a 1-2-3 double play. ARE YOU SERIOUS.

Top of the 13th

Joe Beimel now on for Creekside, handles the middle of the order as Castro and Calhoun fly out and Walker grounds out.

Bottom of the 13th

Hawkins on for his second inning and he has to get thru the middle of the Creekside order who are overdue, but then just about everyone on both teams is overdue. Werth starts it off looking at strike three. Abreu booms a double off the wall in left. Rizzo follows with a solid single advancing Abreu's lard ass to third, with 1st and 3rd the decision is made to walk Negron. Hoping to wiggle out of another jam Lucroy is caught looking for out number two. Ruggiano steps to the plate with a chance to be the hero and he responds with a line drive base hit scoring Abreu with the game winner, sending Creekside to the next round.

WP - Beimel

LP -  Hawkins

SL      5-11-1   Van Slyke 3-7 2B, 3B   Markakis 3-6

CRK   6-11-1   Rizzo 2-6  Ruggiano 2-5    Suarez 2-5

Quite a series, five one-run games, and one two run game. Not much hitting by either team as both teams hit less than .200

Pitching was the name of the game in this series and it was finally decided only because SL ran out of bullpen. Creekside had a big advantage the whole series with their starting pitching and ultimately that is what

won it, the fact that Hernandez could go deep in game 7, where SL had to go to the pen early to stay in the game. A calculated gamble I guess  but I would have done the same thing. Hats off to Sparrow Lake, they deserved better.

ALBANY and GLENVILLE

Game 1

Scherzer vs Wainwright

Goldy starts the scoring off in the top of the 3rd with a leadoff homerun to take the early lead 1-0.  The offenses would continue to stay dormant until the top of the 7th when Wainwright walks McGehee to start off the inning.  Wainwright then gets called for a question balk to move him over to second.  Albany manager it Hot and comes out to protest the game, let’s see how the comish handles this one?  Puig would eventually knock in the McGehee with a RBI single to take a 2-0 lead.  Albany would finally get on the board in the bottom of the 7th when Martinez knocks in Tulo with a RBI double to make it 2-1.  Glenville would add another run in the 8th on a RBI double by Mauer.  Hughes would come in the bottom of the 8th for the 2 inning save.  Glenville takes game one 3-1.

Scherzer W 1-0

Wainwright L 0-1

Game 2

McHugh vs Cueto

This time around Albany takes the early lead in the 2nd on a Joey Votto 2 run homer thanks to leadoff walk of Kemp.  The lead would be short lived as Glenville would tie it up in the top of the 3rd on a clutch 2out single by Panik to knock in Lobaton and Puig.  The score would stay that way until the bottom of the 8th when Hughs walks the leadoff hitter Altuve, the wrong guy to put on.  Altuve when then swipe 2nd but only to see the next guys leave him stranded.  Up steps Morneau with a clutch 2 out single to drive him in for Albany to take the 1 run lead. Top of the 9th Goldy smacks a solo homer off the Albany closer Strop to tie it up.  Mauer would then single and be replaced by pinch runner Jones who would swipe 2ndMcGehee would then drive him in with a big 2 out single to take the 4-3 lead.  Bottom of the 9th starts with the first 2 batters going down in order.  Up steps Hunter to try and keep the Cats in the game and smacks a 2 out double to keep the inning alive.  Albany manger would then look down the bench ask the big boy Prince to step in the box to keep them alive.  He wouldn’t let them down as he smacked a RBI single to tie the game up at 4.  Looks like some free baseball!  The offenses would disappear until the top of 16th when Glenville starts the inning off with a leadoff walk, single by Jones after failing to get the sacrifice down, and then a bloop single by Peralta to load the bases with no outs.  Glenville would tack on the first run on a fielder’s choice and then the second run on a big error by Navorro who dropped the ball at the plate.  Glenville would cruise into the bottom of 16th with a 6-4 lead.  Kemp would keep the boys alive with a walk to get the offense going, followed by a Votto single and then Sandoval stepped up to the plate with a RBI double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Hunter would then come to plate and strike out on another questionable call on a check swing.  That would bring Navarro up to the dish with 2 outs and 2 runners in scoring position only to weakly ground out to first to end the game.  Glenville takes the early 2-0 series lead.

Game 3

Strasburg vs. Gonzalez

Games 3, 4 and 5 were played at Belvidere Ave. with Si and Denny in attendance.

Albany gets back into the series with a convincing 7-1 victory.  After 5 scoreless innings Albany scored 3 in the 6th.  With one out leadoff hitter Votto would double and later scored on a Tulo single.  Martinez then strode to the plate and hit a bomb to make it 3-0.  Albany scored two more in the 7th.  Avila led of with a walk and was replaced by Gose to pinch run.  Martin then walked.  Votto struck again with a double that scored both runners.  Following that hit Glenville pulled Gonzalez and put in Carlos Torres to end the inning.  Glenville would score 1 in the 8th when Prado homered.  Albany would round out the scoring in the 9th when Martin led off with a single and then stole second.  Votto and Martinez would both walk to load the bases. Altuve hit a sac. fly to score Martin and Morneau singled to plate Tulo.  Strasburg went the distance for Albany

Game 4

Wainright vs. Scherzer

Game 4 was a wild affair with Glenville winning 5-3. Albany would jump out to a quick lead taking advantage of some early Scherzer wildness.  Tulo and Martinez waked in the first and then scored on a two out triple by Morneau.  Glenville tied things up in the 3rd.  Puig led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Goldschmidt walked.  Byrd would then single, but Puig was thrown out at the plate on a great throw by Martinez. Peralta then laced a double that scored both Goldy and Byrd.  Albany scored one in the 6th when Uribe reached first on a fielder's choice.  Pinch hitter Navarro then doubled with two outs to score Uribe. In the 7th Puig hit a long one out homer to lock things up again at 3-3.  The score stayed locked into the 9th.  Albany could not mount a threat in the 9th and could only manage a Tulo wak in the top of the frame.  In the bottom of the 9th Prado led off with a walk.  Cespedes then came to bat and proceeded to launch a Wainright fastball into the night for the walkoff winner. Hughes gets the win for Glenville while Wainright goes the distance with a tough loss for Albany. Glenville takes a 3-1 series lead with a chance to clinch at home.

Game 5

Glenville would win the series in another nail biter.  Glenville took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Puig singled and reached second on a Goldschmidt walk.  Peralta then hit a two out single plating Puig.  Albany tied things up in the 3rd with an Uribe lead off homer.  Albany then scored three times in the fourth.  Martinez led off with a double and looked to score when Altuve singled, but the ump called him out on a close play.  Replay did confirm that Lobaton had made the tag before Martinez touched the plate.  Altuve then stole second and scored when Morneau doubled. Uribe would single and advance Morneau to third.  The big hit of the inning was a Navarro double that plated both base runners.  Glenville would get one back in the bottom of the third following a Peralta double and McGehee single.  After 4 the score stood at 4-2 Albany.  After a silent 5th both teams would score two in the 6th.  Kemp led off the inning with a single but was forced out on a Uribe grounder.  Navarro would then strike again with a double scoring Uribe.  Sandoval then singled scoring Navarro. Votto and Tulo would ground out to end the top of the inning.  In the bottom of the frame both Prado and Cespedes singled and then scored on a one out double by Puig.  Going into the 7th Albany still maintained a two run lead at 6-4.  Disaster struck in the bottom of the 7th for Albany as they were hurt by two errors in the inning. Goldschmidt led off the inning with a walk.  Byrd then hit a flyball to center that was misplayed by Martinez.  Peralta then doubled scoring both Goldschmidt and Byrd.  Following a McGehee flyout, Prado ground out and Byrd moved to third on the throw.

Cespedes then came to the plate and hit a grounder to short.  Tulo uncharacteristically made and error that allowed Peralta to score and give Glenville a 7-6 lead.  Albany could not answer with any more runs of the closer Hughes and the Greys would advance with a 7-6 win.  Congratulations to Nathaniel for a great year!

GREEN MOUNTAIN and GLENVILLE

Game 1.

This one was all Golden for the Glenville team.  They score in 1st on sac fly by Goldy, score 2 in 3rd on dbl by Goldy, and homer by Prado in 6th, while Canucks score on a wp in 3rd.  Final--- 4-1.  Scherzer the win, Hughes the save, Lester the loss.

Game 2

In a see-saw battle the winner comes in the 8th!  Prado with 3 run shot in 3rd, Pollack single and E by Puig (3-1),  in the 5th Cron with a 2 run homer (3-3).  In the 6th Cespedes with a homer (4-3), In the 7th, Castillo blasts thetieing homer (4-4).  The 8th brings out the fireworks..... Peralta a solo shot for the lead.  Odor with a triple and Desmond a 2 run shot for the victory.  Final 7-5 Canucks.  Petricka the win, Kimbrel the save, Hughes the loss.

Game 3 was a scoreless affair until Cron led off the 5th with a solo shot off of Gonzalez.  In the 6th Gonzalez gets wild and walks Pollock and Longoria to start the inning.  Duda hits a line drive single to load the bases, and then Kendrick walks to score a run.  Gonzalez is replaced by Wilhemsen.  The next batter Desmond hits a sac. fly to score Longoria. After...you guessed it...another walk to Cron, Marte hits a grounder to Panik allowing Duda to score making it 4-0 Canucks.  In the 7th Glenville finally gets on the board after a Prado double and a Cespedes single.  That's how the game would end. The Canucks take the series lead 2-1.

Game 4 was all about Lester. He combines with Kimbrel for a shoutout of the Greys 2-0. In the second, Cron hits a one out single and then Scherzer plunks Marte to put two on for Castillo.  Castillo promptly raps a double down the line scoring both runners.  That would be all of the scoring in this ballgame as the Canucks take a 3-1 lead and the Glenville faithful are worrying about seeing their beloved Greys lose the series at home after dropping the first two by scoring 1 total run.

Game 5 finally saw the Glenville lumber show up early and often.  Puig leads off the home first with a single and then steals second.  Panik raps a single that scores Puig.  After a Goldy whiff, Byrd hits a single moving Panik to third.  Peralta walks and then McGehee hits a sac fly to plate Panik making the score 2-0 after 1.  In the third Goldy leads off with a walk.  Byrd grounds out moving Goldschmidt to second. With two outs McGehee hits a single that scores Goldy making it 3-0.  They Greys would add two more in the 4th off of Price.  Hundley led off with a single.  Puig singled to put runners on first and second.  Panik and Goldschmidt would both then fly out and looks like Price would get out of the jam.  The next batter though is Byrd and he gets hit by a Price pitch to load the bases.  Peralta then takes advantage of the situation with a single that scores two, which chases  Price for the night.  Atchison comes in to get McGehee to weakly ground out ending the threat, but the Greys have a 5-0 lead.  The Greys score again in the 5th.  After a Mauer strikeout, Cespedes hits a hard double into the gap.  Hundley strikes out, but once again, timely Glenville hitting will bring in a run when Puig triples plating his Cuban mate Cespedes making it 6-0.  The rest of the offensive effort would occur in the 7th for Glenville.  Cespedes led off the inning with a  fly out, and Hundley then grounds out to second.  Puig gets on after drawing a walk, and Panik comes up.  The rookie hits a ground ball, and it looks like the inning will be over, but Duda can't handle the throw.  When the dust settles, Puig is on third and Panik stands at second.  This turn of affairs shakes the Canuck defense and Puig then scores on a passed ball.  Goldschmidt then singles knocking in Panik to make it 8-0 Greys.  There would be no more scoring and the rookie phenom McHugh goes the distance to keep the Greys in the series.  So, the series moves back to the land of the north with Green Mtn. leading 3 games to 2.

Game 6

With Hundley and Cespedes hitting solo blasts and Cron and Duda hitting solo shots, the game enters 12th inning.  Walden makes it through 1,2,3 and Wilhelmsen faces Frandsen in bottom of 12th who gets a BB.......Cron up and tries to bunt for a SAC, but fails on first 2 tries.....so Burnie says ^^*(%$ it and lets him hit and he proceeds to hit a 2 run shot for the game and series winner.......

CREEKSIDE and LONGSTOWN

Game 1

Right from the get-go it was evident this was gonna be a slobberknocker of a series. King Felix drilled lead off batter Russell Martin in the middle of the back to send the message to the Prospectors to not get too comfortable at the plate. Of course the Prospectors retaliated and then some as four Creekside batters were drilled thru out this game. It pretty much set the tone for the series as 12 batters were hit were hit in the series.

Longstown threatened in the first with two runners aboard but Hernandez worked out of the jam. Likewise, Creekside got two runners on in the bottom of the 1sf but they too could not cash in against Alvarez. In the bottom of the 3rd Creekside got rolling, with one out Werth drew a walk, followed by a JAbreu base hit. Alvarez missed his spot against Rizzo and he went deep for a three run shot.Ruggiano singled and Lucroy doubled him home for the 4th run. Longstown got on the board in the 4th with a leadoff walk to Heyward, Blanco singled him to third and stole second to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Hernandez got Harper on a strike three called but Espinosa flied to the warning track to score  Heyward.

After 4 innings 4-1 Creekside

In the 6th, with Alvarez tiring, Creekside put more runs on the board with a Wright single and a Werth HBP putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Rizzo got another one he liked and took it deep again, his second 3 run shot of the game.

After 6 innings  7-1 Creekside

King Felix hit the wall in the top of the 7th as he hit Espinosa to start the inning, he did strike out Martin but then five straight singles by Donaldson, Lind, Ramirez, Crawford and Heyward, sent Felix to the shower. Luckily Ruggiano gunned down Lind at the plate or the damage could have been much worse

After 7 innings   7-5 Creekside

Beimel and Melancon came on to pitch the last 2 1/3 innings to seal the all important first game

Game 2

Collmenter for Longstgown vs Simon for Creekside

Longstown got two runners on in the 1st with a walk to Donaldson followed by a single my Lind but Simon bore down and got out of the inning unscathed.  Collmenter was not as fortunate, as Creekside sent 10 to the plate. Span started things with a single, followed by a Werth whiff. Abreu sent Span to third with a single of his own. Rizzo, who hit two three run shots in game 1 was not given another opportunity as he was intentionally walked in hopes of a double play. Negron knocked the first run in with a solid single to nleft and everyone moved up a base. Ruggiano also singled and two runners scored. After Lucroy was intentionally walked, Suarez knocked in the fourth run of the inning.

Longstown was held scorless by Simon thru six innings, giving up five harmless singles along the way. In the bottom of the 6th Creekside made in 5-0 when Brandon Phillips knocked in Ruggiano with a single. Finally Longstown got on the board against Simon in the 7th as Bryce Harper smoked a no-doubter to right field.

After 7 innings     5-1  Creekside

Longstown added their last run in the 8th as Donaldson drew a leadoff walk, which signaled the end for Simon who threw a great game. Uehara went 2/3 of an inning giving up two singles along the way, to Hanley and Justin Heyward. Melancon came in pitch a flawless 9th to earn his second save of the series.

Game 3

Doug Fister for Creekside vs Edinson Volquez for Longstown

On to the home field of the Longstown Prospectors. Oh how things change so quickly.

In the bottom of the 2nd Longstown threatened as Carl Crawford banged a single to center but was cut down by Lucroy trying to steal second. Turned out to cost the P's a run as Donaldson followed with a two bagger to the wall in right center. Creekside broke on top with single runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th. David Wright doubled and Brandon Phillips who got on by a fielders choice was held at third with only one out. Span cashed him in with a fly ball to medium left field. In the fourth Matt Joyce, who was playing left for Ruggiano got one up in the jete stream and it carried over the wall in right.in

the 5th Brandon doubled ton start the inning and scored on a Denard Span single.

After 4 and a half innings   3-0 Creekside

The Longstown 5th started harmlessly as Fister got Crawford on a weak fly ball and Donaldson went down swinging. This is where the wheels came flying off for Fister, Blanco hit a solo HR, Mark Reynolds singled, Espinosa followed with a hard earned walk, Martin doubled in two runs and Bryce Harper followed with a two run shot that finished the day for Fister. K_Rod came in for Creekside to work out of the inning. But the damage had been done. In the 7th Longstown struck against Joe Beimel as Harper singled with one out and Adam Lind crushed  a 3-1 fastball that wasn't very fast for a two run shot finishing the scoring.

Game 4

Felix Hernandez for Creeksiide vs Alvarez for Longstown

The story of this game was the pitching Alvarez for Longstown. I threw a completee game gem, with the only mistake coming in the 4th as he left one over the plate to Jose Abreu.

Longstown got one in the first off of Hernandez who was clearly off his game. Hanley doubled in Harper who had reached on a fielders choice. Hernandez was in trouble every inning and finally was put out of his misery in the 5th. Russell Martin started things with a single followed by a Bryce Harper double. Hanley was given the free pass, but Adam Lind cashed in two runs with a double and Carl Crawford hit one ointo the bleachers in right to finish the day for Felix. Hernandez went 4 inning giving up eight hits and six earned runs in what was possibly his worst outing of the year.

All of a sudden the series is tied at 2.

Game 5

Jose Fernandez for Creekside vs Collmenter for Longstown

This marked the first action of the post season for Fernandez and he looked extremely sharp thru 4 innings, in fact he only gave up a one out double to Josh Donaldson thru those frames. Collmenter was stingy as well putting up goose eggs thru 4 innings although Creekside threatened in the 1st with back to back single by Abreu and Rizzo. Finally in the 5th Creekside got on the board with a Eugenio Suarez HR. But the 1-0 lead did not last as Longstown countered with three of their own in the bottom of the 5th. With one out Mark Reynolds doubled, Espinosa moved him to 3rd with an infield hit and Russell Martin plated Reynolds with a solid base hit. Espinosa scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Bryce Harper and Hanley finished the scoring with a double that plated Harper.

That was pretty much all she wrote for this game as all zeros were put up the rest of the way as Rondon and Watson went the final four innings for Longstown only giving up one hit.

Game 6

Edinson Volquez for Longstown vs Doug Fister of Creekside

This was the sequel of the game 3 match up. It goes without saying that Creekside was looking forward to getting back home to where they are way more comfortable. They were treated very poorly out in Prospector land, and they were hoping that some home cooking would get them back into this series.

Top of the 1st

Martin and Donaldson both grounded out and Lind popped to third.

Bottom of the 1st

Span grounded out, Werth and Abreu both flied out. Real exciting so far

0-0 after 1

Top of the 2nd

Hanley starts things with a walk, Crawford singles. After Heyward looked at strike 3 Blanco moved Ramirez to third as he hit into a fielders choice. Fister got Harper on a nasty change to end the inning.

Bottom of the 2nd

Rizzo, who had been quiet since game 1's eruption took a fastball into the upper deck in right for an all important lead. Negron, Ruggiano and Lucroy all went down without a whimper.

1-0 Creekside after 2

Top of the 3rd

Longstown wanted to get things back to even as soon as possible and they did just that. Espinosa singled and stole second to start the inning. After Martin popped to short Josh Donaldson knocked in the tie run with a single to right.Lind popped up and Fister pitching carefully to Hanley lost him on a borderline 3-2 pitch. Crawford ended the inning by bouncing out third to first.

Bottom of the 3rd

Nothing, as Suarez and Phillips both grounded out third to first and Span went down looking.

1-1 after 3

Top of the 4th

Nothing for Longstown here as Fister bounced back with a nice inning. Heyward and Blanco hit combackers to the mound and Harper flied to Ruggiano in left.

Bottom of the 4th

After a Werth strike out, Jose Abreu launched one to left to gain the lead back for Creekside. Rizzo flied to right but they weren't finished yet as Negron double to the left center gap and Ruggiano scored them both with a moon shot to center. Lucroy bounced out short to first.

4-1 Creekside after 4

Top of the 5th

Espinosa grounded out 5-3 but then Martin singled up the middle. Fister, however, induced a DP grounder from Donaldson when he went after a nasty sinker.

Bottom of the 5th

Volquez gets em in order as Suarez whiffs, Phillips flied to right and Span flied to center.

4-1 Creekside after 5

Top of the 6th

Fister seems to be getting a second wind as he breezes thru the 6th. Ground outs by Lind and Crawford sandwiched around a fly to right by Hanley.

Bottom of the 6th

Volquez has also settled down nicely as he get Werth, Abreu, and Rizzo in order.

4-1 Creekside after 6

Top of the 7th

Yet again Fister sits the Prospectors down in order as Heyward pops to third, Blanco strikes out and the dangerous Harper flied deep to center.

Bottom of the 7th

After Negron flied to left and Ruggiano flied to right, Lucroy singled and moved to second as Volquez hit Suarez in the foot. Manager Becker came out to get his starter at this point and Tommy Hunter came in to get Phillips on a 5-3 ground out.

4-1 Creekside after 7

Top of the 8th

Longstown is too good a team not to mount a charge and they did in the 8th. Fister got Espinosa to start the inning with a 6-3 ground out. He then completely lost it as he hit back to back batters, Martin and Donaldson bringing the tie run to the plate with Adam Lind who promptly knocked Fister out of the game with a ringing double to score two. Now facing the go-ahead run K-Rod comes on to get Hanley on a pop to third and Uehara came in to get the third out by getting Carl Crawford on a liner to short.

Bottom of the 8th

Needing some insurance runs in the worst way off of Rondon, Span popped to third. Werth followed with a clutch double, Abreu was intentionally walked to bring up Rizzo who homered earlier but got him on a ground out which moved the runners up to 2nd and 3rd. Negron was given a free pass and Rondon was replaced by Tony Watson. Ruggiano greeted him with a bases clearing  double to the wall in left center. Lucroy ended the inning with fly to left but the big damage was done.

7-3 Creekside after 8

Top of the 9th

With Uehara still on the hill, he got Heyward and Blanco on back to back strike outs. But Harper said it ain't over quite yet when he unloaded a shot to the center field bleachers. Melancon came on to get the third out as he struck out Mark Reynolds.

ONE GAME FOR ALL THE MARBLES

Game 7

Alvarez for Longstown vs Hernandez for Creekside

The third match up between the aces of these two clubs. Each team won once and the winner of this one advances to The Series.

It was a classic, here's how it went:

Top of the 1st

Russell Martin flied to left, Josh Donaldson popped to 3rd, Adam Lind singled but was left stranded as Hanley Ramirez grounded out.

Bottom of the 1st

Denard Span drew a leadoff walk and scored on a double from Jayson Werth to give Creekside the early lead. Jose Abreu grounded out 5-3 followed by strikeouts by Anthony Rizzo and Chris Negron.

After 1 - 1-0 Creekside

Top of the 2nd

Longstown struck right back in a big way. Carl Crawford started things with a base hit. King Felix got Justin Heyward on strikes. Blanco followed with a single advancing Crawford to 3rd and putting himself in scoring position by stealing second. Hernandez got Bryce Harper on strikes too but could not retire Espinosa as he drilled a clutch double giving Longstown the lead. To make matters worse Martin followed with a single to plate Espinosa with the third run. It was obvious that Hernandez did not have his great stuff, as after giving up four hits this inning he also hit Donaldson moving Martin into scoring position. Pitching coach Randy Johnson, the all-time great Creekside lefty was sent to the mound to try to restore the confidence of Felix Hernandez. The conference did the job as he got the always dangerous Adam Lind on a weak grounder to second.

Bottom of the 2nd

Justin Ruggiano started the inning off by looking at strike three, Jonathon Lucroy flied to center but Eugenio Suarez kept the inning going with a single to left. Alvarez buckled down and got Brandon Phillips on a grounder to third.

After 2    3-1 Longstown

Top of the 3rd

Felix came out for the 3rd seemingly rejuvenated. He got Ramirez on a 6-3 ground out, Crawford on a pop to 3rd and Heyward on a nasty slider.

Bottom of the 3rd

Span started things with a single into right but Werth popped to Russell Martin and Abreu bounced into a 4-6-3 double play.

After 3    3-1 Longstown

Top of the 4th

Hernandez seemed to be settling in as he got the P's in order Blanco and Espinosa both popped to third and in between Harper grounded out short to first.

Bottom of the 4th

Rizzo, Negron and Ruggiano go down in order as the dominating performance by Alvarez has become evident.

After 4    3-1 Longstown

Top of the 5th

The 5th began innocently enough as Martin bounced out 5-3. Donaldson boomed a double off the wall in left, Hernandez pitched a little too carefully to Lind and lost him. This  set up a key play in the game as Ramirez lifted a fly ball to the gap in right center, Span got a good jump and settled under it only to have it glance off the heel of his glove for an error. To his credit Span came up firing and was able to gun down Donaldson at the plate. Now with runners on 2nd and 3rd the decision was made to walk Crawford intentionally and go to work on Heyward. The strategy worked as Heyward flied to Werth in right.

Bottom of the 5th

Alvarez appeared to be on cruise control as he got Lucroy on a fly to center, he struck out Suarez, he did give up a bloop single to Phillips but got Span on a weak grounder to third.

After 5    3-1 Longstown

Top of the 6th

Hernandez still going after them as he gets the bottom of the Longstown order. Blanco flied to left, Harper singled to center and moved to second as Espinosa grounded out first base to the pitcher covering. Martin ended the inning by grounding out short to first.

Bottom of the 6th

Creekside was glad to see Alvarez out of the game for Longstown as he had been twirling a gem, only giving up the one run in the first and four measley hits. Rondon was asked to give his team two innings to get to Tony Watson the closer. Rondon

got Werth on a bouncer to short but then Abreu hit a bullet down the line for a double. Rondon buckled down and got both Rizzo and Negron on grounders to short.

After 6    3-1 Longstown

Top of the 7th

Hernandez snuck a 3-2 changeup past Donaldson for out number one. Lind stroked a single to right and the decision was made to pinch run Mel Upton for him, a decision that would be second guessed later, Ramirez bounced into a fielders choice and Crawford grounded out 3-1.

Bottom of the 7th

Rondon continued firing bullets and it's starting to look bleak for Creekside as Ruggiano and Lucroy both went down swinging and Suarez flew out to right.

After 7     3-1 Longstown

Top of the 8th

Hernandez was sent out for 8th. The decision was made to stick with the ace in hopes that he would keep them in the game. Heyward drew a walk to lead off the inning and action was noted in the Creekside bullpen. Blanco popped to Lucroy in front of the plate. Fernandez got Harper on strikes but the pesky Espinosa followed with a single. Randy Johnson went to the mound to talk again to Hernandez, he liked what he heard and he left The King in to face Russell Martin. He got him to bounce out short to first.

Bottom of the 8th

Pretty much now or never for Creekside and Longstown had the guy they wanted in the game to finish up the last two innings, their closer Tony Watson. Brandon Phillips started things with a crucial double down the left field line. Span flied out to left for the first out, but Werth came thru with a double of his own to bring Creekside within one with their best hitter, Jose Abreu, at the plate. Watson was up to the task and got him to ground out third to first with Werth advancing 90 feet to third. Rizzo drew a walk  to put runners on the corners and Chris Negron followed with the biggest hit of his career  as he lined a single to center to tie the game and send Rizzo to third. Negron then stole second to put further pressure on the Longstown defense. Ruggiano was walked intentionally and then Lucroy cleared the bases with a drive over the head of Harper in center. Suarez drew a walk and then Phillips, who started the inning with a double, ended the inning with a bouncer back to the mound. The crowd was now going crazy as Creekside managed somehow to find their sticks just in time. Now they needed their closer to do his job, one more time.

After 8   6-3 Creekside

Top of the 9th

Mark Melancon was called on to save the game for Felix Hernandez who battled for eight innings when he clearly did not have his usual stuff. He gave up nine hits over the eight innings and walked three. He managed to get out of numerous jams thru out this game to keep Creekside within shouting distance. Now Creekside was asking Melancon for three outs to advance to The Series. Josh Donaldson drew a leadoff walk and the capacity crowds heartbeats raced in unison. Mark Reynolds stepped to the plate in the spot that would have been Adam Lind had he not been run for, and he grounded out harmlessly short to first. Hanley Ramirez popped to third for the second out, leaving it up to Carl Crawford who bounced out short to first to end the game.

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: CREEKSIDE and GREEN MOUNTAIN

Game 1

Price for GM vs Hernandez for Cre

As expected pitching dominated at the outset. GM went down in order in the top of the first against Felix Hernandez. Creekside managed a leadoff walk to Span but then went down in order as well against David Price.

Lightning struck quickly in the 2nd as Lucas Duda took a Hernandez offering to a bad place for a 1-0 lead.  King Felix buckled  down and got Desmond and Marte on strikes and got "Stinky" Odor on a pop to third.

Not much in the Creekside 2nd, Lucroy drew a one out walk but Price stranded him at first. In the GM third, Kendrick slashed a two out line drive double down the line in right but Longoria went down swinging on a fine change from Hernandez.

Things got started offensively for Creekside in the 3rd, with a little help from some shoddy GM fielding. Wright drew a leadoff walk which was followed by a Span single. Werth hit a routine grounder to Kendrick who played it into an error that loaded the bases with no outs and Creeksides two best hitters to come. Well, Abreu and Rizzo both had opportunities to do major damage and instead, David Price sent them back to the dugouts in short order, blowing fastballs by both of them. Price might have thought he was going to wiggle out of the jam but he couldn't get the fastball past Ruggiano who powdered one off the wall in center and it took a weird hop on Snider. When the smoke cleared, the bases where cleared with Ruggiano on third. Mgr Burnham, sensing that Price was about to unravel decided to remove him and brought in Atchison to try to get the third out, which he did as Lucroy grounded out third to first.

3-1 Creekside After 3

Top of the 4th saw the Canucks battle back as they have all year. Pollock started it with a single, Duda sent him to third with a single of his own. Desmond hit a rocket that Phillips picked and turned into a 4-6-3 dp as Pollock scored the second run for GM. The double play was huge since Marte drove the first pitch he saw into the left center field gap for a double. "Stinky" could not cash him in however as Hernandez got him on a nasty slider. The Creekside 4th was pretty crazy and once it was over, the game pretty much was as well. Petricka was sent out to keep the game close for GM. It started with a harmless pop to second by Suarez, but Phillips drew a walk, Wright got on with an infield single, Span knocked them both in witha ringing double down the line in right. Werth followed with another double making it 6-1, but Creekside was done yet. Abreu grounded out but Rizzo knocked in Werth with a base hit. The pesky Ruggiano singled and Lucroy knocked them both in with the third double of the inning, finishing what was a bad outing for Petricka. Redmond came on to give up a walk to Suarez but got Phillips on a comebacker to end it.

9-2 Creekside After 4

Not much went on after this, in fact, Hernandez got stronger and retired the last 16 GM batters Creekside did not do much either against the GM bullpen. They did put up one additional run in the 8th off of Kimbrel as Span lead off with a double and Werth followed with a base hit to drive him in. Abreu, who had a smelly game hit into a dp and Rizzo struck out.

Game 2

Lester for GM vs Simon for Cre

Hits were at a real premium in this one. In the first, Simon got GM in order. Lester walked Span to start things for Creekside. Werth hit into a fielders choice but finally Abreu's bat woke up with a booking double to left which put Creekside on the board.

GM threatened in the second as Marte singled with two outs, and stole second. Simon was a bit rattled as he walked Odor, but he wiggled out of it as Snider grounded to first..

1-0 Creekside After 3

Thunder struck in the GM 4th as Duda launched a no-doubter into the night to tie things. The Creekside 4th was strange but nothing came of it in the end. Rizzo smoked a one out single to right. Lester got the second out when Negron flew to left. Lester then balked and Rizzo went to second. Lester was clearly rattled as he walked Ruggiano and then on a close 1-2 pitch to Lucroy, he erupted with quite a tirade which must have included some choice words for the umpiring in general. He was sent to the showers which was fine with Creekside as they were not seeing the ball well against Lester. Atchison picked up the count to Lucroy and he hit a hard one hopper to Kendrick that handcuffed him for his second error in as many games and it also loaded the bases. The decision was made to leave Atchison in to pitch with the bases loaded as it turned out to be the correct call as he got Suarez on strikes.

1-1 After 4

In the 5th GM got the only other run they would need this day. With one out Wellington Castillo got one up in the breeze and it carried out to give GM the lead and as it turned out, the game.

2-1 GM After 5
