A brief history of Monash University
Named after prominent Australian, Sir John Monash, Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in 1958 making it the first university to be established in the state of Victoria for 106 years. Since its first intake of students in 1961, Monash has grown from a single campus at Clayton to six campuses in Australia, one in Malaysia and one in South Africa.

Sir John Monash (1865 - 1931)
"Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community." - Sir John Monash Born in West Melbourne of German-Polish Jewish parents, Sir John Monash was an outstanding scholar and engineer who made great contributions to the wider community. He began private practice as a civil engineer in 1894, specialising in the new techniques of reinforced concrete.

Sir John was responsible for a number of engineering projects around Victoria including numerous bridges, silos and buildings. Always a leader, he was given charge of the entire Australian Corps during the First World War. At the age of thirty, Sir John had completed degrees in law, engineering and arts at the University of Melbourne where he was later to become Vice-Chancellor. One of Sir John's greatest achievements was the development of Victoria's power generation industry as head of the State Electricity Commission. The University's motto Ancora Imparo, Italian for "I am still learning", is a fitting description of this great Australian.
