Sir John was responsible for a number of engineering projects around Victoria including numerous bridges, silos and buildings. Always a leader, he was given charge of the entire Australian Corps during the First World War. At the age of thirty, Sir John had completed degrees in law, engineering and arts at the University of Melbourne where he was later to become Vice-Chancellor. One of Sir John's greatest achievements was the development of Victoria's power generation industry as head of the State Electricity Commission. The University's motto Ancora Imparo, Italian for "I am still learning", is a fitting description of this great Australian. |
