The Copper Cyclops
While in high school, I nicknamed the Courthouse "the copper cyclops." On winter nights from my bedroom on the 2nd floor of 1603 Lafayette, I could see the white eye of the Courthouse clock staring out at me over the rooftops and through the branches. The decorative ironwork that perches on top of the tower had yet to be added. Somewhere back in my childhood, I remember a class outing where we toured the Courthouse. If memory serves me, there was a museum in the basement, and we climbed the stairway up through the tower to an area where the massive bell dangled on a wooden frame. The museum has been gone now for many years. The liberty type bell now sits in the Archives Room. If you are interested in touring the Courthouse, call Mary Ellen Grossman at (812) 379-1600. Tours will be scheduled only during work hours during the week. No tours available on the weekends. Across the street from the Courthouse is the Commons Mall.
