10 Penny Bridge-Charleston Indiana
Investigated on 12/8/2004 10:20 pm

Reported Haunting:Haunted by a bum that was killed here. Legend is that if you place 10 pennies across the bridge in a row, turn your car and headlights off, when you try and start your car it acts like it don't want to start and your pennies will be scatterd or missing.

Directions: Hwy 62 to Salem Church road, Follow to Tunnel Mill Road and at T-intersection of Salem Church Road and Tunnel Mill turn Left. Second Bridge will be it, or at least it will be the bridge we investigated.

Investigation: We first turned right at the T-Intersection. I don't beleive there are any houses on this section of the road that was built before 2000! The road is newly paved, lots of curves and very hilly. Dissapointed that all we were finding were new houses, a new road and obviously no bridge large enough to provide shelter to anything but a few cats, we still drove the entire length of the road back to Hwy 62. We then turned around and decided to follow the road the rest of the way back. At the T-intersection we went to the Left. The road also is newly paved, curvy and hilly. A few small bridges, and we finally came across one that would be large enough for a "bum" to find shelter. Deciding that we should drive the rest of the way to make sure there were no more good size bridges we came down a hill and crossed a larger bridge. Immediatly coming onto the bridge we all said "Thats It!". Up the next hill sits a creepy old boarded up house that looks as if it could use some investigstions itself! It was creepy enough to make us go on to another driveway to turn around. We turned around at the next place and went back to the first bridge we had passed. Placed 10 pennies in a row, turned off the car, and restarted the car without a problem and found our pennies exactly as we had left them. By this time all had admitted to each other that the next bridge is the one we should be checking out, all of us had a nervous feeling and felt our hair stand up on the backs of our necks as we crossed it. I must also mention that accompaning us a was a complete skeptic, who says that "haunted is ony your imagination" and that "surely there is more to do then to go out looking for something that isn't there". He also admitted that he to felt nervous, but didn't know why. We stopped on the bridge, and placed our 10 pennies in a row, got back in the car, turned it off, and restarted it. Our car started fine, our pennies were undisturbed and lay exactly as we had left them.

Ten Pennies all in a row....

Pennies unchanged, we put a foot in the picture so we could easily identify picture two later at home.

Our Pennies may have remained unchanged but....

However, while getting back into the car our skeptic noticed something in the display of my digital camera. Three lights, one orange, one blue, and one red dancing in the display! He held the camera up in front of the windsheild and we watched these three "lights" move side to side, into each other and turn to one, and back to two, then three. The "lights" could not be seen by us, only through the camera. We held the camera up to watch them and put it back down again several times to verify that we could see nothing without looking through the camera. This led to looking for anything that could explain the lights. It was pitch black, the only light being the car headlights, no streetlights, etc. Turning off the car again and getting out of the car holding up the camera to again see the lights in the display we snapped a couple of pictures. The photo below is the photo. I also took the camera and took a picture of the side of the bridge area on my side of the car. My photo revealed a misty area and many "orbs". It is very possible that the camera captured moisture from the water which we could hear below, but it was so dark, we couldn't see it. After looking at the photo I can plainly see a face image in the "mist" and two other people see a face in an area of the photo that I still do not see, however they couldn't see the face I seen until I opened the picture up in paint and drew around it marking out the eyes, mouth etc. I still cannot see the face they see, they claim their face looks like a woman. I have posted the photo with a box drawn around the face that I see.

The light in the top of the photo is the one that was moving and changing, the one in the lower right hand corner was probably pretty close to where I was standing, The photo is taken looking at the entire bridge from the middle of the road. As you can tell, it was very dark out there, and there were no visible lights that we could see with our eyes.

Close up of the light that appeared to be changing and moving in the camera display.

Side of the bridge taken to the right side of the bridge.

Can you see the face?

I hesitated to post this investigation due to the fact that we all want to investigate the area more. Especailly during the day, which might reveal a source for the lights. We could then also see exactly how far below the water is. If it is possible that we could capture the "lights" again and even maybe on my digital video camera with night vision? We hope to do this sooner then later, but seeing as winter is fast approaching we may not be able to go soon. I do not want to claim that we found anything here that could not be easily explained. I can say that our skeptic is no longer a skeptic and seems we have made another "ghost hunting" friend! I have heard over and over "When are we going back?"! So look for an update to this investigation as soon as it is not 25 degrees outside.
