European Sovereigns, 2017: Three Monarchist Fantasies

It is tempting when trying to imagine exactly what we monarchists would like Europe to look like to combine monarchies that never actually existed at the same time. But on this page I have not done so, instead sticking strictly to theoretical restorations of the status quo that prevailed at the beginning (January) of three crucial years of European history: 1914, 1848, and 1789. In the disputed case of France, I have favoured the Orleans line for "1848" and the Spanish Bourbon line for "1789," following a similar pattern (junior vs. senior line respectively) for the Two Sicilies. For Saxony I have somewhat arbitrarily favoured the male but morganatic line for "1789" and the adoptive female line for "1848." For "1848" and "1789," states other than empires, kingdoms, and electorates are omitted since there would have been so many. In all three cases the currently existing monarchies when present at all are left as they actually are. Note that the German kingdoms listed in "1848" except for Hannover still existed in 1914, but were part of the German Empire, a more centralized state than the Holy Roman Empire ever was. I have chosen for these particular charts not to regard the Ottoman Empire as "European," though it still occupied a significant part of Europe in 1848 and even more in 1789.
