This list does not include:
--monarchies abolished prior to the French Revolution
--monarchies absorbed into larger monarchies
--monarchies which had existed for less than ten years
--former colonies of monarchies which have not had their own monarch in modern times

Restoration, when noted, is considered to include the accession of a monarch, therefore excluding the vacant restorations proclaimed by dictators in Hungary (1920) and Spain (1947; confirmed 1969).
