Those 4-Hers returning with dogs who will be showing at second year level and above need to be sharpening their dogs' skills in on-leash obedience in preparation for off-lead work. These dogs need to be doing the work with one command and on a loose leash before trying to remove the leash. Once the dog is working well, drop the leash and try the commands or during Heeling the leash may be draped over the handler's shoulder to accustom the dog to working when both of the handler's hands are empty. If the dog fails to respond go back to on-lead for a while. Off-lead work is a big step and can't be rushed. A dog that is worked off-leash and consistently isn't responding but isn't put back on leash to correct the behavior is learning to not respond correctly. Don't let the dog practice wrong behavior, help them do it right. The advanced levels require even more practice at home between classes. These levels are work, but it is very rewarding when the dog finally "gets it", and people will be quite impressed at what the advanced dogs can do!
