Gibson County 4-H Dog Project

The Gibson County 4-H Dog Training project exists to help young people develop skills in leadership and cooperation through training the family dog. 4-Hers attend classes and practice daily at home to learn how to train in basic through advanced obedience. Dogs must have practice each day at home to successfully learn the required commands. For safety's sake and to be fair to the 4-Her, only non-aggressive dogs and dogs that can be completely under the control of the 4-Her are to be entered in the project. 4-H should not be looked upon as a cheap way to get an unruly dog trained. The 4-Her will be the trainer under the direction of the 4-H leaders. A beginning trainer is not able to solve behavior problems. Learning to train dogs through 4-H is a very rewarding experience. Success is when a child takes his buddy through classes and learns how to better communicate with the dog. Training is the foundation for a very rewarding friendship and bond between child and dog. Many 50 cent ribbons have been framed and cherished for years to come as a reminder of a 10 year-old and a mutt's accomplishments at the county fair
