The Seminoles, whose ancestors were mainly Creek, fled in the 18th century from Bristish dominated Georgia and Alabama and settled in Spanish-controlled Florida. They built open sided houses called chickees in the swamps.

After the United States purchased Florida from Spain, and Jackson became president, he moved to deport all Indians east of the Mississippi to the Plains,.The remaining Seminoles moved even deeper into the swaps, and eventually the government withdrew its troops and left the Seminoles in the Everglades, where approximately 1350 of them remain today.

Osceola was a Georgia-born leader of the Seminoles in their struggle to remain in their Florida homeland.

He made his stand by slashing the removal treaty with a knife, and his action triggered a general uprising. In 1837, he fell victim to trickery and was seized by the federal government. He died in 1838, "cursing the white man to the end of his breath".
