John Carter, Jr was born in 1813 and presumably in the state of Kentucky. This is the earliest ancestor in this line that has been documented. Theories are that he was born in either Nelson or Shelby county, Kentucky; however, nothing at this point can be proven. It is felt that this Carter line traces back to the North Carolina Carter line, but further research needs to be done in order to document this.It is known that he was in Owen county Indiana by the year 1833, he is shown living in the Montgomery township area of Owen county in the 1840 census, and in the Taylor township area just north of Quincy in the 1850 Owen county census. Although John was married to Eliza Nutterfield, no proof of their marriage can as yet be found. They were the parents of 13 children, 3 of them dying in infancy and two of them dying in the Civil War.Sometime just after 1860, John moved about 1 and 1/4 miles north into Putnam county. His first wife, Eliza died there and John remarried to Ann Sinclair in 1867. John and Ann resided there until their deaths. The children of John and Eliza settled in Morgan, Monroe, Owen, Putnam and Tipton counties in Indiana. My direct line ancestors of his children are both son, Morris, my 2nd great grandfather through my father's paternal side and son, Calvin, my 4th great grandfather through my father's maternal side. Surnames associated with this Carter line are:Arnett,Baldon, Dunkin, Mannan, McCullough,Pittman,Ratts, Taylor, and Truax. I encourage anyone connected with these lines to contact me and I will be happy to exchange data with you.
