If you have ever been on the receiving end of an internet hoax or prank, which includes virus warnings, or stories pleading for your sympathy and urging you to spread the word, you will appreciate this page.
This page contains the links to many sites you can visit that have exposed many lies propagated on the internet. An added enlightenment that I was not even aware of until I took a Networking class was that many of these so-called 'virus warnings' actually contain viruses themselves.
The CIAC site will actually provide information on how to spot hoaxes. Network Associates provides a library of real virus threats, including information on type of virus/worm, when it was discovered, how it manifests itself, etc...
Snopes is an excellent resource for discovering the many virus hoaxes and urban legends (and, yes, there are many!) that are running rampant on the internet and clogging our email systems.
