RECYCLED CRAFTS

We like to protect our environment by recycling. We also like to do alot of craft projects, and we need supplies that are affordable. You guessed it! We use recycled materials for alot of our craft projects. It makes it extra special when those craft projects apply to badge work.

STAR GAZER-can apply to SPACE EXPLORER tri-it act.5 also a cute SWAP

  • Supplies: empty black film cannisters(washed), plastic capped push pins, constellation patterns
  • Directions:take cap off of film cannister and retain, tape constellation pattern on bottom of cannister, with cannister on firm surface use push pins to punch hole at each star marking on pattern. Label cannister with constellation name or tape on inside for a game of "What constellation is it?". To use as star gazer hold open end of cannister up to eye and look toward light. Punch hole in center of lid and add string for a necklace or coin holder.
  • Suggestions for constellations: Big dipper, little dipper, casseopia,Norhtern cross, Orion
  • For Constellation Pattern Download here If problems downloading let me know.

MINIWORLD TERRARIUM-can apply to EARTH IS OUR HOME try-it act.5 also a great Mothers Day Gift.

  • Supplies: 2- empty 2 liter plastic bottles, gravel, sand, potting soil, small collection of sticks-acorns-leaves, and small sizes plants.(we subdivided a larger potted plant)
  • Getting Ready: for use with Brownies in a troop meeting I recommend having the bottles precut and ready for use. Bottle cutting is a job for adults. Take 1st bottle and cut around the bottom ring that is approximately 3" up from the base of bottle.(when finished should have a bowl shape with flat bottom) Take the 2nd bottle and find where the bottle first begins to narrow to the cap, cut around the bottle about 1 1/2" above this line.(when finished should have a tall vase shape with flat bottom)The Bowl like shape fits on top of Vase like shape to make cap.
  • Directions: Set up assembly line,at first station add 1 handful of rocks to bottom of Vase bottle, next add sand to cover rocks(aquarium sand adds color),then with scoop add about 2" of potting soil on top of rocks and sand, with end of long wooden spoon have girl make hole in center of soil, then "plant" plant in hole pressing soil around base and making sure roots are covered, let girls select from an array of nature "additives", leaves, sticks, rocks, acorns, pine cones etc. to decorate their MINIWORLD, add 2 or 3 tablespoon of water and then put cap on to retain moisture. Keep in indirect sunlight. Remind girls cap should be kept on for plant to grow, should not need to water.
  • Suggestions: Take a nature hike and have girls collect their own "additives"(in a place where this is allowed, of course). Use mini popcycle sticks and craft trail sign to plant in MINIWORLD with girl's name etc. Use as a center piece at an awards banquet. You will be impressed with the results.

SEWING KIT-can apply to STITCH IT TOGETHER

  • SUPPLIES: small amount felt, paperboard(can use cereal boxes), thread, cotton balls, embroidery floss, tacky glue, empty clean dry "Crystal Light" powder drink containers(4"x2 1/2")

  • On flattened cereal box trace the lid of the container. Cut out the circle slightly smaller than your tracing. You should have a cardboard disc that will fit inside the top lid of container.(slightly smaller than 2 1/2") Out of felt cut out a 4" diameter circle.(I had both of these patterns precut for girls to trace) Thread needle using a double length of thread tied in a knot.(easier for 1st time sewers) Have girls begin sewing around the outer edge of the circle using a running stitch ,staying near the edge. Once they reach the spot were they began sewing have them hold beginning knot and thread and pull gently. Felt will begin to pucker and start to close. In pocket that is formed place 2 to 3 cotton balls(2 worked for us) Now place paperboard disc on top of cotton balls. Pull thread tight until felt comes over the top of disc forming a mushroom cap shape. Do some anchoring stitches from one side of circle to the other and then tie off.(this work does not have to be neat as will be covered up) Put tacky glue on top side of lid and place "FELT CUSHION" in place on top.(be sure to hide all threads under "cap") ** You now have SEWING KIT to put your sewing suplies in with a Pin Cushion on top **

  • Now cut a 5" x 3" pc of felt. Using a marker have each girl print her name on the felt. With a double strand of embroidery floss have each girl use a backstick to embroider her name onto felt.(why not try some flowers too) Use tacky glue and glue to the side of "Sewing Kit".
