Few Types of Sniper RiflesThere are rifles out there that many people think are made specifically for sniping, but they really aren't, the world never really had a genuine rifle made specifically for snipers unil AFTER Vietnam. Many may recall a Marine Sniper--Carlos N. Hathcock II-- who had 93 confirmed kills in the Vietnam War. He too didn't have a rifle made specially for snipers, instead they used single bolt action rifles and slapped a scope to the top, some of the rifles can be picked up in hunting stores, many times that's where they got them. But remember, a weapon is only as good as the person that's using it.

The M40A1
*Relaxing sigh* Ahh yes, the M40A1, a magnificent rifle, look at the way it's set up, a smooth underline of the barrel, a sleek and sturdy looking scope, smooth action bolt, the fiberglass body, this is something to be put in museums. This is a rifle that helped change the Commanding Officers opinion about permanent sniper schools, and also the men who used them. In Vietnam, the ratio of 1 Vietnamiese killed was close to 200,000-500,000 bullets. That's way more then necessary. "One shot, One kill" is the term the the Marines use today, and it's extremely effective, it's remarkable to see a 39 cent bullet, at a maximum range of 1,200 yards, to hit a target no bigger than a half dollar. If you were to put that bullet, that rifle, and that sniper in the field, you would have a lethal combination. |
Wouldn't You Believe?
I know I know, even these short chunks of a rifle can also be accurate out on the sniping fields. The rifle in this picture, being used by the Swiss, also has a silencer, which nevertheless is a good thing if you're out in an open field. I'm a Marine fanatic so I'll stick to some Marine facts ok? Ok. The Marines never use a bi-pod, because it adds too much weight and it's too bulky, instead they'll use what's out there for them to use. Another thing is they never use silencers, for one thing it adds weight, and adds length to the rifle which may cause it to create the outline of the barrel so the patrol that's walking by you can see you're taking aim on an important person in their little unit. |
SVD
Ahhh yes this too is an efficent sniper rifle. Made and used by the Russians, this rifle is feared anywhere. Look at the long body of the rifle, how sturdy it is, how comfortable the stock looks. Look at the long extensive barrel, you think this puppy can be as accurate as the new M40A3? Well think again, this rifle's maximum range goes anywhere up to and including 900 yards, while the M40A3 ranges from 1,200 yards. Although some do not consider this a sniper rifle, they say "The SVD is not a true sniper rifle in todays terms, but it performs exceptionally well for what it was designed for, a weapon to extend the range of the average rifle squad." Well to me this can be deadly up to 1000 yards with the right operator behind it. SO DON'T TELL ME DIFFERENTLY!!!
