Catalina Island is located 26 miles off the coast of Los Angeles and can only be reached by boat or helicopter. There is one main street with wonderful waterfront shops and restaurants. There are beautiful beaches where you can Swing, rent snorkel gear, parasail, rent a boat and fish, or take a ride on a glass bottom boat and view Catalina’s famous natural undersea gardens. You can explore the island’s interior by hiking, renting a bike or golf cart, or by taking a ride on a tour bus. There’s a 9-hole golf course and a miniature golf course; tennis and horseback riding are also available. Find some time to just be a tourist here - Catalina itself is quite magical! If you love Australia's Whitsunday Islands, you'll adore Catalina. This is pure Swing Heaven.

The Workshops

Whatever your Swing dance experience is, Swing Camp Catalina offers classes to suit all levels of Lindy Hop. You'll need to specify your level and the classes you want to attend on your Swing Camp Catalina application form. A word of caution: the dance standard in the U.S. is generally higher than it is in Australia. (After all, they've been doing Swing alot longer than most of us). So, be realistic when making your level selection.

Beginner: New for 2000, this level is for those who have had only a few Swing lessons.

Beginner/Intermediate: Must be comfortable with triple steps and be familiar with the basics: Swing Out, Circle, Side-by-Side Charleston.

Intermediate: Besides knowing the basics, you must have a solid lead or follow and be comfortable dancing to a variety of tempos.

Advanced: You have been dancing for several years not several months. You "walk the walk and talk the talk". You flow easily between slow songs and fast songs, styling and syncopating to the music. You pick up new steps quickly, and you’re ready for some trickerations.

Advanced Routines (must bring a partner): You are an advanced dancer who has an advanced partner with whom you are comfortable working. There will be more emphasis on choreography in this class and less on lead/follow.

Other Dance Styles Taught:

  • East Coast Swing: a six count basic step that evolved from the Lindy Hop into its own dance during the 1940's. This is the style that is perhaps the most well known all over the world. It was called "Bop" in the 50's, and "Jive" in Europe, and is generally what people are referring to when they use the term "Jitterbug."
  • Swing/Jazz Movement: no leading or following here, just a chance to work on your own body movement & style.
  • 20’s Charleston: learn the basics and fun variations to the dance that was all the rage in the 1920's. Swing evolved directly from the Charleston, & much of its influence can still be seen today in the Lindy Hop.
  • Collegiate Shag: popular around the US in the 1930's, this dance is done close to your partner with fast and fancy footwork. It allows for an easy break during fast music.
  • Shim Sham & Jitterbug Stroll: fun additions to your Swing dance repertoire that don't require a partner. Shim Sham and Jitterbug Stroll are popular Swing line dances that are enjoyed around the world today.
  • Balboa: a smooth version of the Shag that originated in Southern California. It is more of a social dance with subtle intricate footwork.
  • Aerials (bring a partner): you must be physically fit & an Intermediate or Advanced Swing dancer to take these classes! First accomplished by Frankie Manning, aerials (lifts or air steps) are now a fun, show-stopping addition to your "performance" Swing dancing. PLEASE NOTE: Although very impressive, aerials can be dangerous to perform, & should only be executed during "Swing Jams" and performances - not on social dance floors.
  • Argentine Tango: originated in the mid 1880's in Buenos Aires, & since that time, around the world, dancers have been caught up in the magic of this romantic & dramatic dance. The workshops in Tango will combine basic steps along with flicks, ochos, dips & cortés, to give you the feel of this original Argentine Tango style.
  • Tap: a true artform in balance, rhythm & timing, tap dancing was extremely popular during the Jazz & Swing eras, & is seeing a strong resurgence today. Learning to tap will help add footwork & style to your Swing dancing.
  • Dips and Tricks (bring a partner): you must be at least an Intermediate level dancer with a partner, & together you are looking for some fancy moves to jazz up your repertoire.
  • Hip Hop for Lindy Hoppers: contemporary movement. Get down, get funky!
