Owen County Journal -- 2 Sep 1875 At his residence 3 miles southwest of Spencer, on Wed. morning, Sep 1st of flux, Thomas Ellett, aged about 60 years. Mr. Ellett was one of the pioneers of this county and was highly respected by all who knew him. Owen County Journal -- 16 Sep 1875 Obituary At a meeting of Sugar Grove Grange No. 993, Patrons of Husbandry of Owen county, Indiana, a committee was appointed to draft resolutions upon the death of Thomas Ellett, which reported as follows: WHEREAS, It has pleased Almighty God to remove from our midst by death, Thomas Ellett, a worthy member of this Grange, a model man of piety and virtue, and an affectionate husband and loving father, and one loved and esteemed by all who knew him, whose good name is better than precious ointment, and whose loss we mourn, not as those having no hope; our loss is his eternal gain; WHEREAS, We deem it fitting on this melancholy occassion that we should give expression of unfeigned sorrow at the loss which the community and this Grange have sustained by his death and to testify to our appreciation of him as a citizen and member of this order; therefore RESOLVED,That we extend to his bereaved family our sincere sympathy in this sad hour of their affliction; that though his life has gone out, his name, linked with so many virtues, will live forever. RESOLVED, That as a further mark of respect, these proceedings be entered on our records, and a copy be transmitted to the family. Research: At the time of the 1850 Owen Co., IN census, Thomas was living with Thomas & Katherine Wells in Washington Twp. In 1860, he as living with Harland and Sarah Richards and working as a farmer. By 1870, he had married and was living in Washington Twp., Owen Co., IN. He married Margaret BARNES, daughter of Isaac BARNES & Susannah PRICE. Born 15 April 1834 in Owen Co., IN. Died 4 January 1911 in Owen Co., IN. Buried in Barnes Cem., Franklin Twp., Owen Co., IN.
