Madison Movie Pics from Long Beach and
Lake Castiac in California
(updated 12/18/99) | Go back to HydroWorld

Once again, special thanks to Jack Lowe for 8 NEW pictures (35 total), the 12/17/99 writeup,
and some of the picture descriptions!  If anyone has the actor's name of the Budweiser driver, or
anyone not mentioned in the below pictures, feel free to email me and I'll get the names up.  Enjoy!

Jack just put up a great page in tribute to the end of filming from the movie located at http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/hjljr/hydros/its-a-wrap.htm. Check it out!

Other websites to check out Jack's pictures, videos, writeups and other "Madison" archives
are Hydrofest's Unofficial Madison Movie Website, Hydros, the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum
(where four of the boats in the movie as well as countless volunteers took much time and pride in
what they accomplished),
"Madison" Labor Day Week Pictures, and Judy Fisk's "Madison" pictures.

Jack Lowe's email reprinted from the Powerboat List:
"Reminiscing with Bob Schroeder Wednesday at Lake Castiac about eastern
races, boats, and drivers he asked me if I knew the late Joey Wolf from
NJ and Reading, PA ... I didn't ... Bob said his memory was jogged when
his Miss Bud was running near Long Beach Harbor. A 135 hydro driver,
"Joey was a wild, wild guy ... he flew as a mechanic in the famous
Spruce Goose flight in Long Beach Harbor," said Bob. In talking with
Bob about his career he told me he raced from 1957 to '82 ... he said
his best ride was with Bernie in 1963 when he won his first heat with
the two stage Allison ... but he dumped it at Detroit and the season was
down hill from there ... he and most of the other old timers who were
around for the "Madison" filming "aren't very interested" in what is
going on with today's boats ... John Freeman, who owns an assortment
nearing a count of 60 vintage boats and has owned Atlas Van Lines
since the mid 1980's, says Bob is very knowledgeable as to location
of old hulls. Of course, neither of those guys is on line. : ~ ((
Maybe they would use by vintage Atari 800 ..."

mad28a.jpg (5137 bytes) The "real" Miss Budweiser gives chase to the half-Bud / half-Miss Madison hull during filming.
mad29a.jpg (5256 bytes) A closer view of the above.  Bet you've not seen a paint job
like this before!
mad30a.jpg (8365 bytes) Actor Jim Caviezel, playing Miss Madison driver Jim McCormick, double-checks everything before a water scene.
mad31a.jpg (5707 bytes) The "real" Miss Budweiser takes control in the turn.
mad32a.jpg (8302 bytes) Viewing footage from the last scene on the water, Todd Yarling (in red driver's suit), Jim Caviezel (in Miss Madison driver's suit with hand on tv), Director Bill Bindley right above him with sunglasses in hair), and Garry Manley in white Budweiser crew uniform (far left).
mad33a.jpg (5781 bytes) Todd Yarling brings back the Bob Schroeder-owned, painted Budweiser to the dock.
mad34a.jpg (6956 bytes) Don Mock, who built three of the models for "Madison", is on
the left.  On the right is Gary Jensen, father of David Jensen, who
built the "Miss Madison" model for the movie.
mad35a.jpg (6406 bytes) Here is a model of the Miss Thriftway, which is not for the
movie but is one of Don Mock's personal models.

"This is my first day at Lake Castiac ... David Williams has left the filming scene so
Mark Evans has to be happy since that puts him behind the wheel of Miss Madison ...
but it also meant that he had to shave his goatee (picture below) ... everyone said
all went well at Long Beach Sat., Mon., & Tue. despite windy conditions and rough
water ... Jerry Hopp told me they filmed quite a bit of close side by side action ....
the only problem to report is on John Freeman's Atlas Van Lines, driven by Ernie
King, which developed a knock ... and yes, Virginia, there is a Cucamonga ...
Atlas' engine was taken to a shop in Rancho Cucamongo, about 30 miles away from
Castiac, for a rebuild ... sorry I didn't get the name of the shop ... Jerry Hopp
also told me they wanted some shots with nothing but water and sky background and
he drove Hawaii Kai III out past the Queen Mary into the bay and, between the
windy driving the swell and the usually number of tug boats, Catalina cruisers and
other boats around the bay he "caught some air" on four-foot swells and said
"I had a blast"... The Queen Mary, now there is a vintage hull! The wind continued
today at the Lake, where in reality it is almost always windy. Cat's Pride, now painted
as Miss Budweiser, performed just great on two rides, Mitch Evans driving and
the actor playing the Bud driver in the movie getting the sight-seeing ride in the rear
seat in the first run and then Mitch ran up close to brother Mark driving Miss Madison.
It's tough on all of us in the pits because the boats are far away on the Lake."

mad11a.jpg (5523 bytes) Roger Newton talked Ernie King out of this 99 cent hat.  Roger had told Ernie he wanted it and when Ernie was ready to take out the Atlas at Long Beach, Roger jokingly asked him, "Can I have the hat
if you die out there?"  Ernie gave it to him.  Ike Kielgass is sitting
next to Roger and Bob Schroeder is hidden behind Roger.
mad12a.jpg (8150 bytes) Steve and Peter on the front of the painted Miss Budweiser
(Cat's Pride).
mad13a.jpg (6791 bytes) The Miss Madison getting a lift into the water, while observers get a good glimpse of her beauty.
mad14a.jpg (8619 bytes) There's an imposter in the actor's seat of the painted Miss
Budweiser.  Could be the Miss Madison driver spying on the competition to gain an upperhand.
mad15a.jpg (7670 bytes) Mitch Evans behind the wheel of the "Cat's Pride repainted Miss Budweiser."
mad16a.jpg (6670 bytes) A close-up of the actor playing Rick Winston, the Miss Budweiser driver.  He has no idea what he got himself into! :)
mad17a.jpg (8749 bytes) Another shot of the actor getting some last minute directions.
mad18a.jpg (6907 bytes) Before take-off!
mad19a.jpg (5444 bytes) Mark Evans with the freshly shaved chin to drive Miss Madison in place of David Williams.
mad20a.jpg (6272 bytes) Bob Jensen, Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum volunteer, catches
some rays (and some sleep) on Miss Madison's deck.
mad21a.jpg (6450 bytes) Great pit shot of the Miss Madison getting placed on her trailer!
mad22a.jpg (7185 bytes) Bob Jensen helping trailer the Miss Madison.
mad23a.jpg (6259 bytes) What a sight to see!  Just look at that rough water
Mitch drove through!
mad24a.jpg (7732 bytes) Mitch Evans and Bud actor wait for the rope to get back
to the dock.
mad25a.jpg (7598 bytes) Mitch Evans catches the rope while Jerry Hopp looks on with the Bud actor thinking, "I can do this!"
mad26a.jpg (8036 bytes) Jerry Hopp takes a knee while the film crew prepares the hull for filming with a camera attachment.
mad27a.jpg (6108 bytes) Bud actor taking it easy.

Thanks to Jack Lowe for the update and the 10 great pictures below of the people behind the
scenes that put in so much time to make this happen and sometimes are forgotten!!

mad7a.jpg (7208 bytes) (Bottom left) Probably on a break, Garry Manley and John Freeman talk about what they wish they were doing while Bob Schroeder (owner of the Bud in the movie) looks on in the background.
mad8a.jpg (7911 bytes) The Miss Madison is not having a good day!
mad9a.jpg (8487 bytes) I found the missing piece of Miss Madison!
mad10a.jpg (8238 bytes) Hey!  If you are Bud guys, can I have one of your jackets or a beer!
(Mr. Little would not like all this sitting around when there's work to be done).   Seriously, these are Bud extras for a scene.

Scott - they are going to have a busy day today (Saturday), probably hitting the water shortly
after 7 a.m. It is very windy here in Riverside, about 55 miles away, so I hope it's okay in Long
Beach ... I think the plan is to move two boats to the Lake Castiac on Sunday and the rest
on Monday. Then filming Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday wrap-up.

The Kai has been patched up to slow the leaking oil that had the Coast Guard concerned. Cat's
Pride is now painted red and I think she will still get a Notre Dame paint job, too.
What a workhorse she has been and Pete and Steve buzz around her all day. A couple of very
dedicated guys.  Jack Lowe

mad1a.jpg (7263 bytes) Roger in Gerry Kingen's Bud ready to fire her up ... but they had a carburetor problem and never got her going ... since fixed ... On the front of the boat is Ike Kielgass, over Roger's shoulder is Phillip Knox from the Long Beach area.
mad2a.jpg (6974 bytes) Posing in front of the Cat's Pride cabover are: (back) John Freeman (owner of the Atlas in the movie), Roger Newton and Peter Orten from the Hydroplane & Raceboat Museum, (front) Dr. Ken
Muscatel and David Williams, both with busy driving duties.
mad3a.jpg (8745 bytes) Roger Newton with Phillip Knox and Ike Kielgass rebuilding the carb.
mad4a.jpg (9448 bytes) Setting up shoot in Bud pits ... check out the lineup of Bud "bullets"!  Director Bill Bindley can be seen to the right in front.
mad5a.jpg (8526 bytes) From left, Bill Meyer (crewcut), Tony Steinhardt (production consultant and member of '71 Gold Cup Team ), Ernie King in the hooded sweatshirt in the center, Ike Kielgass sitting in front center, and "Fearless" Freddie Alter standing at the right.
mad6a.jpg (8824 bytes) On Friday, Roger Newton gives a tour of the Bud to this Coast Guard worker.
