The word “Happiness” means a state of well-being and contentment; good fortune. Happiness, that wonderful emotion that overwhelms us when life is good. In reality our true happiness comes from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It is because of God that we are able to have the things in life that brings us pleasure. In order to have those things we must be obedient to God’s Word. 1 John 3:22 says “And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.”

That’s true, all we have to do is be in obedience with God’s commandments and He will grant us the desires of our heart. The problem is that we take these gifts that God has given us and forget who made it all possible. We take on the assumption that because we worked hard we deserve the things we have. No doubt, we do owe ourselves the pleasures that life offers, but it is God that gives us the strength and knowledge to accomplish what we have.

Seek first the kingdom of God and you will find favor from the Lord.

“Happiness” we all want it, we wish it upon those dear to us, but we search so hard to obtain it that our thinking resorts to “Worldly Pleasures” believeing that they’ll bring us happiness. Some believe that a big house, new car, great wealth, and human relationships will bring us happiness. If you look at each one, I mean really look at it for its worth, there is no guarantee that they will assure our happiness.

The Big House: better living conditions, more space, but along with that comes more financial burdens which leads to stress.

The New Car: Oh the smell of a new car. You get behind the wheel, adjust your body to the leather or crushed velvet seating and feel the joy or owning one, but there is the insurance coverage, increasing gas prices, maintenance, and after a while that “Oh What a Feeling to Drive” becomes “How much does that repair cost.”

Lots of Money: Having a lot of money can become an addiction because you constantly try to find means to have more so you will feel financially stable. Never content.

Human Relationships are not always guranteed either. If God isn’t first in either one’s life hardship and heart-ache are not too far behind. Everything that was mentioned will give the feeling of happiness, but only for a moment if God is not the center of your life.

"Whatsoever ye ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son."

Are you beginning to see what I’m saying? If what brings you happiness will also glorify the name of Jesus, then surely those things will be given to you. Those worldly possessions will not go to heaven with you, they are to be left for our children and their children. Your happiness comes from knowing that you are one of God’s children, and knowing that should be the greatest joy in your life. Having the assurance that when you leave this world you will be going to a place where there is not more crying, no more pain and suffering, no worries because you are in the kingdom of our Lord God.

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Colossians 3:1-2)

Having God in my life, is true happiness.
