fredisdead design co.

hi, thanks for dropping by at fredisdead design co.
around here you'll see stuff i've done - mostly for the pure joy for doing it. some, and only some, to sustain myself and my rather inexpensive joys

i have a good life - do what i love to, and thankfully earn just about enough doing it, to not want to change anything

on the right is my business card, so if you need anything you think i can manage, give me a call

to add a cya-note in my defense, i am not a web-designer. my passion is and will always remain publication design, so don't judge me on the rather un-tech-savvy web page construction

you can call me on 91-22-4127748

logos and business cards

client: sharmila khanna
profile: sharmila is a well known choreographer in bombay's fashion circuit.
year: 2003

i have worked with sharmila for over three years now, and she is absolutely the best person to do stuff for ... approves everything over the net and usually shows her glee/disappointment most spontaneously

the card was executed with a varnish coat for the dark typo and red silk screen, all on a gloss black art paper card

<< roll over to see her 2002 design

client: great indian art
profile: anshul nagar is an art dealer who deals particularly in african and indian art
year: 2002

great indian art is a company that is a showcase for artists and the logo was designed to project the ideology that the company is merely the frame or a platform for the wonderful world of art. shown alongside is a close-up of the logo - the hand-drawn frame converted in two colour

GIA

client: naina's
profile: fashion boutique
year: 2002

naina's logo bore the sun motif because she has always had a reverence for the sun as a source of inspiration in her elaborate garment designs

a full set of stationery and collateral was deisgned for her boutique, this is a horizontal adaptation of her company business card, click on card to see her stationery

client: citilights
profile: real estate company
year: 2003

client: pantheon
profile: chemical export agency
year: 2002

the inspiration for the logo was the beautiful building in italy, after which the company was named.

<< the stately architecture of the pantheon in rome

client: image inc.
profile: a grooming and etiquette training school for women in bombay
year: 2003

image inc. is a grooming centre run by rukshana eisa, where ladies are educated on the finer aspects of social behavior, personal grooming and hosting among other things.

the idea was to give the company a very classy yet simple identity, in stark black and white

client: anshul nagar
profile: art dealer
year: 2002

anshul wanted a card designed for personal social use (away from the set designed for his company 'great indian art' above)

i created a rather minimal design built around a bar-code encasing his mobile number and his 'nicely short' mail address. the reverse side has his name and other contact information

client: glitter designer jewellery
profile: professional jewellery designer
year: 1999

gift box look in a smart pinstripe design for his business card and stationery set with an abrupt definer - jewellery. by design

Innovative Enterprse

client: innovative enterprise
profile: computer equipment company
year: 2000

used 6 rectangles to create a very geometric logo for innovative enterprise (IE) - a company dealing in tech-equipment and software support

client: ckl financial services
profile: a financial services company including stock and investment trading
year: 2000

used initials to created a rough sketched coin logo. aqua-teal used to contrast the largely clean black-white layout

Stratum Logo

client: stratum software
profile: software and related services
year: 1998

a logo for a friend who was setting up her software company. designed to appear like a rock etching. (the word stratum means a layer of rock) and the red ‘A’ symbolising the cliché a-rated service, adds colour and depth to the identity

client: pentafreight
profile: freight handling agent
year: 2001

satish, who i've never met, contacted me to create a simple identity for his freight handling company. i worked on it for a month between some mails sent back and forth ... then the man closed all correspondence... anyways his logo is here, so you could pick it up if your company has the same name
; )

client: farhad dadyburjor
profile: freelance writer
year: 2000

farhad is a young freelance writer who regularly features in a number of publications in bombay including elle, bombay times and femina girl

worked out this alphabet soup design for him and outputted the job in four variations of the same design. initial print run of 2000 cards with two design variations – single colour offset on handmade paper and ivory

client: indu kapahi / devaratna
profile: yoga instructor
year: 2000

indu is a very spiritual person and wanted her card to reflect that, the colour used 'geru' (orangish) is associated with spirituality and the cooling pale green has been used to contrast that. devratna is her adopted name

the logo used a composition of alphabets with a faint resemblance to a yogic posture.

client: power kids
profile: non profit child educational programme
year: 2002

jeru and satya were two girls committed to start a programme to educate children on environmental and ecological issues. the idea for the logo came from an original illustration by a friend, anahita.

we created stationery that was printed in three colours on brown paper to retain the eco-feel

this is a horizontal adaptation of their vertical business card

client: sonal agarwal
profile: interior designer
year: 1998

used 'sa' as her brand and created a graphic depicting a little blueprint architectural drawing with distances and angles marked out

one of my first jobs and still among my little favourites. more variations were printed with the initial offset-print run of 1200 pieces

client: securitech
profile: security equipment dealer
year: 2000

the corporate logo was designed with a little siren bringing into play the nature of the company. then the layout was made to look a bit more friendly with the large type usage

buddy: rayomand 'auda' bharucha
year: 1998

rayomand, an old and dear friend, had planned to start an event/party hosting company - it never got off plan stage

rayomand died in 1999 when he was only 31. this card is here in his memory - for his inexhaustible zeal for life... for the close to 10 years he spent battling cancer, with a spirit of determination to live as close to a normal life as possible

client: self
profile: graphic design
year: 1998

you could ask: why the green field? why the football? i'd say: why not?

isn't the black and white leather football one of the most beautiful objects you have ever, ever seen

<< an older business card ... ah the beautiful game

invites

client: movado watch company
profile: an upmarket swiss watch company making an entry into the indian market
year: 2001

the art for the invite was completely based on an actual watch in the movado range with the golden dot (representing 12 hours) being the focal point of the design. the colours used were dull gold and black

the front face (when closed) was just the black watch face with 'movado' appearing as it would on the actual watch dial. shown below is back of the envelope with a circular die-cut flap

client: birla transasia carpets - the bohemia show
profile: invite for the yantra lifestyle store
year: 2002

an invite for a special exhibition of carpets designed by artist jehangir jani. the concept was having the type flowing around little 'mats' of art which were part of an actual painting used for the carpets. the card would be an accordion fold of four faces revealing parts of the invite as each face is opened

on the left is a larger view of the second face of the accordion invite showing the invite copy flowing around the mat graphic

due to budget limitations a simpler version shown on the right was eventually printed - fashioned out of another jani painting of a stake connecting a man's heart to the external 'yantra'
