A Cynic's View Of Movies

I admit it, i'm a movie junkie. Granted, i haven't seen a new release in years...and the last time i actually went to a theatre to sit down and watch a movie was in November (it was a foreign film too) and before that, i can't even REMEMBER when i was at the movies...maybe it was when Crash was in town. Thinking about it, that might have sort of terrified me into not going to movies for quite some time. Those who have seen it and know that i'm talking about will understand.

But videos...my GOD! videos!!! If they had a frequent buyer club at the video store i go to, i'd probably be their most valued customer...nation wide. I usually go in there and buy four or five movies a week, and depending on if i've gone to Target that week, i'll buy more. And i know what started it all too, my parents have THOUSANDS of movies.

It all started (harmlessly, we thought) with Video Discos, something that is less known than BETA, even tho they lasted longer...as i like to summarize when people ask me just what they are, i merely say that video discs are to laser discs (and DVD) as records are to cd's. In the few years that Vid discs were available, we somehow managed to collect about 300 of them. When my parents broke down and bought a VCR (i'm thinking mid-80's here...all i know is that *I* have the first VCR they ever bought, and it's a piece of crap that only rewinds if the movie is playing) their collection became even more immense...to the point where my mother did an inventory five years ago and came up with about 800 titles. And that was 5 years ago, i don't even want to KNOW how many they have now. Then my father (who is definately a part of the 'boys and their toys' syndrome) decided to buy a laser disc player (along with his 64" tv, surround sound, home theatre type stuff) and they quickly managed to collect 100 movies. Then, no more than two months ago, they purchased a DVD player...so far (that i know of, i could be wrong) they only have 7 or 8 movies...but give it some time...

So, i came by my movie junkie status honestly...i inherited it. As soon as i walk into my movie store, the clerk tells me what movies he knows i'd be interested in that are available for me to reserve...he know to tell me only of the ones that are coming out in widescreen format...he knows that i really don't care if the new Star Trek movie is being released, but he'll probalby call me the day they start taking reservations for the Star Wars Prequel...yeah, i know that's still months and months and months down the line, but i've already got the money saved up for it...as well as the money to see it in the theatre (properly fitted for sound, of course) at least 5...probably more like 10 times (that money is in a special savings account in my sock drawer).

And every movie junkie has very definitave tastes...I don't like weterns as a general rule. I have never seen ONE western that i liked. Action/Adventure, i'll usually pass up, althought i did like Executive Decision and a few others. If you want to count movies like Hunt For Red October (i can recite every line from every character), Armageddon, Crimson Tide and ANY Bond or Indiana Jones movie as A/A, then i have more tolerance for them than one would think...but most i usually avoid at all cost. Give me a comedy, a musical, a classic, a drama...I'm all over that. When i'm at my parents house, AMC is the channel of choice for me (Poor Ony, and i mean that in the she has no money sense, doesn't have cable)

Having not seen a new release in ages, I watch the Academy Awards just to see which movies i should not buy. Like last year...Titanic won a blue gazillion awards, which should have been my first tip that the movie was going to be horrible. Luckily, i didn't buy it, and never had any plans to buy it, however i was forced to watch it on the plane back from Hawaii last year...i've never wanted to jump out of a plane without a parachute before that point...But this year, since the awards were more split between films, there's a good chance the winners are worth seeing.

Only two of the people i rooted for to win actually did, both for the supporting roles that they played...James Coburn (who i saw in this really freaky movie from the 70's, i believe, called the President's Analyst...add it to your list of must-see movies if you haven't already) and Dame Judi Dench (the woman is awesome...need i say more?) But that is not to say that i didn't root for Steven Spielberg, it's just...hello...duh...like he was going to lose? I don't think so...And can i tell you how incredibly pissed i was that that totally horrid song from Prince of Egypt won? (and i only say that out of my deep loathing of both Whitey Houston and Pariah Carey...the song itself isn't so bad, it's just the vocalists i abhor) *I* wanted I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing to win...cuz, i mean...Aerosmith sang it..and, c'mon...Aerosmith sang it. They're like, the best...and it gives me hope that a guy like Ben Affleck will realize his heart's desire lies within me...i know he wants me..or, would if he ever had the chance to meet me...ok, maybe it's just that i want him... prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. LMAO
