ROMANY SPREAD

The Romany Spread uses 21 cards, which are typically laid out in vertical columns of three cards each. Or you may prefer to think of it as three horizontal rows, each containing seven cards.

This lay-out is believed to have originated with the Romany gypsies, who are legendary for their skill at divination. The gypsies regarded the Tarot deck as a book of unlimited knowledge and wisdom, whose secrets were open to anyone who mastered the complex meanings of each card. The Romany Spread may be used to determine both present and future influences, potential and hidden factors. It is more complex than the Celtic Cross and may offer an in-depth look at any given situation.

The lay-out for this spread is fairly simple. The querant shuffles the cards and cuts the deck into three piles, which are laid face down on the table. The reader then reassembles the deck, placing the last pile on top of the first one, and then placing the middle pile either on the top or the bottom. The cards are then dealt off the top of the deck as follows:

COLUMN ONE: Cards 1, 2 and 3. This column represents the self. It reveals that which is of most concern to the seeker at this time, and also suggests what is beginning to grow within - whether creative energy, confusion, grief, spiritual awakening, etc. Underlying potential or influences are often symbolized by the third card, at the bottom of the column.

COLUMN TWO: Cards 4, 5, and 6. This column represents the environment in which the questioner operates. Close relationships of every sort are described in this column. This would include, family, friends, lovers, co-workers, etc. Sometimes it signifies events that are happening, or about to happen, to someone close to the seeker. It may also signify the general atmoshpere surrounding the enquirer at home, socially or in the workplace.

COLUMN THREE: Cards 7, 8 and 9. Column three represents The seekers, hopes, fears, dreams and wishes.

COLUMN FOUR: Cards 10, 11 and 12. This column represents plans in progress, projects in motion, known factors. IT may reveal progress, success, delays, or failures.

COLUMN FIVE: Cards 13, 14 and 15. This column reveal the hidden destiny. Here are the surpirses, unforeseen developments, and hidden influences at work in the life of the questioner. This is the column where destiny, karma, or fate me be glimpsed.

COLUMN SIX: Cards 16, 17 and 18. The near future. This column reveals what may happen to the enquirer within the next two months or so.

COLUMN SEVEN: Cards 19, 20 and 21. Further future. In this column, events transpiring from four to six months ahead are indicated. Columns 4, 5 and 6 may also tie in with this one, so that together they tell an unfolding sotry. If, however, this column seems to be unrelated to the rest of the spread, a twist of fate may be in store for the enquirer.
