Notes taken 22 June 2007 from what little information there is in the Records Office about Lee Lane Chapel Internments.

A few days ago Audrey sent me a note of a grave of the Andertons, after she had got soaked to the skin in an attempt to collect some info before the grave stones go, this being one of many not recorded in the ledgers:

Joseph Anderton of Rivington who died June 1st 1836 aged 77 Also Rachel his wife who died Sept 2 1837 aged 78yrs.

Affliction sore long time I bore

Physicians were in vein

but death did seize when god did please

and eased me of my pain

There are many more that pre date the supposed 1840 records.  There are also lots of grave stones that are not recorded in the chapels records.

I took a look at the record book for the internments before 1884 and the record is not much more than an old exercise ruled book, the types used in schools, it appears to be a copy that someone started to make of the original registers.  There was no original register to work from; records between 1840 and 1884 are sketchy. Records prior to 1840 simply don't exist.

Internments at Lee Chapel 1884 to 1894: are mainly infant. Doing a rough count there were 205 graves of under 18's between 1884 and 1894.   These are the graves of the forgotten.  I listed as best I could the graves between these dates of over 18's.

Adults above 18 (To many to record below age 18) –

There are 309 interments between years 1884 and 1894 alone, of which 205 are under 18's, many small children.

Other records at Preston that may be worth checking:

CUHo /34 Burial account book 1897 to 1942

CUHo /42 Graveyard record book 1880

CUHo /43 Graveyard record book 1920 to 1956

CUHo /45 Certificates of death registration 1879 to 1897

The monumental inscriptions are supposed to be recorded at Manchester Family History Society, if not then we have no chance as the developer has wasted no time in starting to move graves stones.
