Dhanbad, the Coal belt of Bihar:Coal is India's most important mineral resource with reserves exceeding 94,000 million tons. of this, 4,600 million tons is prime coking coal which is found only in the Jharia Coalfield, Dhanbad in the state of Bihar. However, fire has consumed nearly 40 million tons of coal in the Jharia Coalfield since the early 1900s. Underground mine fires have resulted in staggering losses totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, and isolating nearly 1,500 million tons of coal from development. The situation poses a serious threat to the health, safety, and well being of more than one million people living in the region.
In 1971 Coal India Ltd. (CIL) created Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL) to manage most of the Jharia Coalfield collieries. Bharat Coking coal Limited is a subsidiary of coal India Limited to manage the coal belt of Dhanbad.
