Beginner Grade
A beginner is a competitor who has not taken a full year of Irish Dance lessons, thereby giving beginners a full year with such status.
A Beginner must move into the Advanced Beginner category the next year.

Advanced Beginner Grade
An advanced beginner who wins 1st, 2nd or 3rd place will advance to the Novice category in that particular dance.
Competition dances are reel, light jug, slip jig, traditional treble jig and traditional hornpipe, as a minimum requirement.
Per NAFC rules, Advanced Beginner treble jig and hornpipe are to be danced at traditional (fast) speed only.

Open Grade (Prizewinner)
A competitor who does not qualify as a Beginner, Advanced Beginner or as a Novice.
Set dances will be danced at the beginning of the day.
A dancer must be registered in one Open hard shoe (treble jig or hornpipe) and one Open soft shoe (reel or slip jig) to compete in Open set dances..
Traditional and non-traditional sets are allowed.

An Adult Beginner is a competitor who never took Irish dancing lessons as a juvenile and is over 18 years of age.

Registration for figure dances will be accepted only from a teacher or a representative of the dance school designated by the teacher.  See rule 26.

Preliminary Championship
Preliminary Championships are open to those who, at any NAFC recognized feis:
a) have placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each of the Open (prizewinner) solo categories and
b) have never won 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the Open Championships.
A dancer who wins two first place awards in one calendar year will move on to Open Championship the following year or as soon as the second win is achieved in any age category in the following years. Only in the case of back-to-back Feiseanna (successive days), in which case the first win in the first Feis will not change the dancer’s status for the second Feis.
A dancer is required to perform a minimum of two dances, a light shoe dance (reel or slip jig for females and reel only for males), and a hard shoe dance (treble jig or hornpipe) at the discretion of the dancer.  There are no Preliminary Championship set dances.

Tir na nÓg
This is an exhibition for children 2 through 5 years old who have never taken Irish dance lessons.
One reel step will be danced.
Tir na nÓg will be danced on the Championship stage as the first dance of the day.
There is no entry fee and registration will be at the stage.

 
Music
Instrumental competitions will consist of one traditional Irish Air and one Irish dance tune.
Vocal competition will consist of one traditional Irish song without accompaniment.
No sheet music is to be used.
