Leyland Olympian 10.4m

The Olympian is the most successful double decker bus. More than 300,000 have been sold around the world since its introduction in 1980. Because of its popularity, it is the only Leyland design retained by Volvo when it took over.

The chassis layout consists of three basic parts; the front end together with the front axle, the rear axle assembly and the engine compartment. The engine is mounted at a rear vertical position but the radiator is located at the front. They are connected via steel tubes and this greatly enhances the engine's cooling rate.

The Olympian chassis comes in a variety of configurations. SBS have chosen the 2-axled, 10.25 metre long version. 200 buses were registered between 1986 - 1988. All received an Alexander R-type bodywork, fitted with Leyland TL11 engines and Leyland Fully Charged Hydracyclic gearboxes. The choice of Leyland engines and  gearboxes is for easy maintenance and conformity of parts.

The Leyland Olympian have an advanced dashboard with its warning/indicator lights neatly arranged at the top. Besides a speedometer, there's also an oil and air pressure gauge. The steering wheel is set at an angle for easy handling. It is also the first double decker to have a door to the driver's cab and bells located between windows. Its seating arrangement is good and a ventilation system ensures a comfortable ride. Recently, on some buses, the seats directly behind the staircase were removed to create a standing bay.

The Leyland Olympians are now confined to serve the Jurong area. They are deployed on routes that serve Jurong Industrial Estate and the surrounding housing estates of Boon Lay, Jurong East, Jurong West and Taman Jurong. But there are still a few that serve other parts of the island. SBS plan to withdraw them from the fleet and open bidding have been announced.
