| In the early 80s, SBS had a
single 0305 double-decker. This bus was probably a demonstrator sent by Mercedes-Benz.
Unlike the present 0305s, the bus had a single width entrance and a completely different
bodywork. It had probably been scrapped by now. The present fleet of 0305s were registered between 1984 - 1987. They had a Walter Alexander R-type bodywork with a one and a half width entrance. The driver can choose to have the entrance half-open or fully-open but he can't do that now. The button for a half-open entrance was removed. As with all buses prior to 1992, the seat directly behind the entrance was replaced by a validator. The ticket machine beneath the staircase was also removed. With the slot enlarged, a second validator was installed. This was probably the reason why the entrance have to be fully-open. Initially, there were 200 buses but now only 28 remains. The rest were probably sold and the Jurong Bus Park became their final stop in Singapore. The remaining buses is for sale and soon the 0305 will be gone. At 11.1 m long and capable of carrying 109 passengers, the 0305 was the biggest bus in Singapore at its time. It lost that title with the coming of the Superbus in 1993. Nevertheless, it reigned supreme for 11 years for its perfomance far outclassed the Leyland Atlanteans. The floor slope upwards towards the rear lower deck. This is because the OM407h engine is located beneath it. However, the ceiling remains flat. As a result, the overall height at the rear lower deck is reduced but this allowed the allocation of seats at the rear upper deck. One particularly serious accident involving a 0305 happened at Ang Mo Kio Interchange a few years back. The bus reversed at full speed, crashing through the metal fencing and into the main street. It then went over the divider before coming to a halt on the other side. The fencing was replaced by a concrete barrier to stop buses from reaching the street if a similar accident occurs. |
