Sophie May
Book Values

About once a week I get an e-mail from someone who is wondering what the Sophie May book they have is worth. Of course I’m sure you have heard it said that an antique is only worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, and that certainly applies here as well. The only ‘official’ listing I have ever seen for the value of Sophie May books was in a reference book at a flea market which listed the value on different antique books. It had the Little Prudy and the Dotty Dimple books listed in it and had them being worth $20-$25 each. I did not purchase this book, and I don’t remember the name of it, so I can’t tell you what it is if you wanted to try to find the book.

As of this writing, I have now purchased at least one copy of every Sophie May book that she wrote. I can tell you that I have not paid near $20 each for them. In flea markets and antique shops, I have found them for anywhere from .10 to about $15.00 per book. Most of my collection has been purchased through eBay online auctions, and I would say that they are both the best source for finding her books, and the best way to judge what the books are worth. There are almost always about 10 of her books for sale on eBay any day that I check.

Through eBay, her books generally sale for around $5.00 each. Especially the Prudy and Dotty Dimple series, as they were the most widely published books she did. Some of the covers, however, seem to be more desirable, and therefore tend to bring a little more money. The covers published by Hurst & Co. Publishers in 1912-13, which usually have a color cut-out pasted in the center of the cover always sell well, especially the one that has the little girl with the bucket of cherries. I would say they are more in the $7.50-$10.00 range. Also, the EDITHA Series by H.M. Caldwell Co. in the late teens usually bring about that much. The Flaxie Frizzle series, and the Little Prudy’s Flyaway series are a bit harder to find, and so tend to bring a bit more money, say $5-$10 each, depending on the cover. There seems to be a big variance in the price of her Quinnebassit series of books, but I would generally put them in that same price range.

The Little Prudy’s Children series was the last one that was published, and I think it may have only been published 4 times. This is the most rare and valuable of her books. I have paid close to $50 to get a few of these titles. Also, her small novel ‘The Campion's Diamonds’ was a tough one to get. I have only seen one copy of this book for sale, and I won that auction, paying over $50 to get it (and finish out my collection!). In general, I would put any of these books in the $20-$50 range.

I hope that this might give you an idea of what your book may be worth. If you are still confused, or have more specific questions on your books, please e-mail me and I will try to help you.
