Ohio & Mississippi Railroad
Seymour Roundhouse

(copyright wording will not appear on the purchased print)

This is the beautiful 9-stall brick roundhouse and turntable that was built in Seymour for the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. This railroad laid rails into Seymour in 1854, and because steam locomotives of the time were not particularly reliable, roundhouses were built every 50 or so miles along the line to service them. As the locomotive’s reliability went up in the 1880’s, a larger roundhouse was built in Washington, Indiana, and most of the smaller ones were tore down. The turntable, and a small five stall building remained for some time after this. This building was located basically where the parking lot to the north of Tipton Street, at the railroad crossing, is now.
