Just How Good Sequels Can Be

Did you ever notice that most games that come out are sequels? Well, they are. Not all of them, but most. New games don't exactly go over very well (with the exception to original games like Chrono Trigger and Earthworm Jim). There are a number of games coming out this fall and most of them are sequels. There's nothing wrong with sequels, but no game should have too many or the game concept might become less in value (like the Mega Man series).

Anyway, today I'm going to tell about the new game sequels coming up this fall (starting with Nintendo 64 then going to Super NES, Game Boy, and Virtual Boy) and I'm going to compare them to their originals (or other sequels that have come before it). Okay, here we go:

Super Mario 64

  • Original: Super Mario Bros. (NES)
  • Other Games: Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES), Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES), Super Mario World (Super NES), Super Mario Land (GB), and Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins (GB)
Obviously, as all of you have heard dozens of times before, Super Mario 64 is the best game ever (that is until Super Mario 64 II comes out). It's been a long time since a real Mario adventure. He's had a lot of different innovative games along the way, but none are as good as the true Mario adventures. In this Mario game, he can do almost anything he wants. He can run, jump, swim, walk, crawl, fly, flip, and more. This is truely a wonderful game and a very good game to buy, too. But to get this incredibly awesome game, you have to buy the Nintendo 64 system, which arrives Sept. 29th (in Europe and Australia, the date of release is March 1st, 1997). So, go get it. Remember, there are more great games for the N64 than just Super Mario 64.

Pilotwings 64

  • Original: Pilotwings (Super NES)
  • Other Games: None
The original Pilotwings wasn't exactly the talk of the town, but it wasn't that bad either. Now, we have Pilotwings 64 for the Nintendo 64. It is a much improvement of the original. First off, it has 64-Bit graphics, which give it a realistic feel that the Super NES one didn't have. I've seen it in motion and the animation is very smooth. Enough with the graphics. What about the gameplay? From what I've seen it has great gameplay. Super Mario 64 may beat it at gameplay, but then again, they're two different games. One is Action-Adventure, the other is a Flight Simulation game. To tell you the truth, I didn't like the original game. But now since I've seen what Pilotwings 64 can do, I think I really will like the sequel very much.

Killer Instinct Gold

  • Original: Killer Instinct (Super NES / Arcade)
  • Other Games: Killer Instinct (Super GB) and Killer Instinct 2 (Arcade)
I haven't played any of the Killer Instinct games, so I wouldn't know what to say about this game, except that it's going to use some of the new characters from Killer Instinct 2 and that it's supposed to be really good. Check out the Killer Instinct section on my page for more information on the game. (It's in the Super NES Section on the Main Page.)

Mortal Kombat Trilogy

  • Original: Mortal Kombat (Super NES / Arcade)
  • Other Games: Mortal Kombat (GB), Mortal Kombat II (Super NES / GB / Arcade), and Mortal Kombat 3 (Super NES / GB / Arcade)
Just like Killer Instinct, I don't play Mortal Kombat games. But I can see what everyone thinks about this one. They think it's going to be great. And at 128 megabits, it will be. All I know about this one is that characters from all (Read it: all) the Mortal Kombat games from the past are supposed to be in this game. Now that is great.

Tetrisphere

  • Original: Tetris (NES)
  • Other Games: Tetris (GB), Tetris 2 (Super NES / NES / GB), Tetris & Dr. Mario (Super NES), and 3-D Tetris (VB)
Not much is known at this time about Tetrisphere. I've only seen one picture of it so far. It's in the latest issure of Nintendo Power magazine. The game is only supposed to be 32 megabits, so it will probably be one of the cheapest games. Since it is a Tetris game, it will probably be very challenging and fun.

Wave Race 64

  • Original: Wave Race (GB)
  • Other Games: None
From what I've seen, this game looks great. Basically, all together, it's water racing. With the use of Kawasaki Jetskiis, you can race other players. I believe that there can only be a one or two player mode. No four players. I could be wrong though. Since I never played the original Wave Race for Game Boy, I can't completely compare it to this game. What's obvious is that this one has better graphics and sound. Try this one out when it comes out in November. I will.

Super Mario Kart R

  • Original: Super Mario Kart (Super NES)
  • Other Games: None
This game looks like it could be the next best Mario game coming out. Unlike the first SMK, this game has hills and other contours of land. And, of course, the graphics are much better. Donkey Kong Jr. and the Koopa Troopa are now replaced by Wario and Kamek (the MagiKoopa from Yoshi's Island). And, yes, this game does have a battle mode. This game also has a four player mode. This is a must-have game.

Now, here are the upcoming Super NES sequels:

Kirby Super Star

  • Original: Kirby's Dream Land (GB)
  • Other Games: Kirby's Dream Land 2 (Super GB) and Kirby's Adventure (NES)
This is one of the biggest games coming out this fall (it might already be out). This game-pak includes nine different games in it. For more information, check out the Kirby Super Star Section (it will be in the Super NES Section within the next week or so).

Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble

  • Original: Donkey Kong Country (Super NES)
  • Other Games: Donkey Kong Land (Super GB) and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Super NES)
This will be the big one this fall for the Super NES. Rare packed even more varied play and goodies into this game than the last one. This one stars Dixie Kong (Player One) and Kiddy Kong (Player Two). Like the other DKC games, this one uses ACM graphics. The Super NES isn't gone yet. This game proves it. Look for it this fall.

Prince of Persia 2

  • Original: Prince of Persia (Super NES / NES / GB)
  • Other Games: None
All I know is that this game will be much better than the original: with better graphics, more varied gameplay, and twice as much memory (16 megabits). If you liked the first one, you'll probably like this one too.

Street Fighter Alpha 2

  • Original: Street Fighter II (Super NES / Arcade)
  • Other Games: Street Fighter II Turbo (Super NES), Super Street Fighter II (Super NES), and Street Fighter II (Super GB)
All I can say is that this will be a big seller this fall. It's been two years since a big SFII game. Now, the next one is finally coming.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

  • Original: Mortal Kombat (Super NES / Arcade)
  • Other Games: Mortal Kombat (GB), Mortal Kombat II (Super NES / GB / Arcade), and Mortal Kombat 3 (Super NES / GB / Arcade)
This will be just as big as the other Super NES fighting game coming outhis fall, which is Street Fighter Alpha 2. Whatever you'd expect from a Mortal Kombat game is right here in this game. Be sure to check it out this fall.

Now, here is an upcoming Super Game Boy sequel:

Donkey Kong Land 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

  • Original: Donkey Kong Country (Super NES)
  • Other Games: Donkey Kong Land (Super GB) and Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (Super NES)
From the subtitle, you probably already know that this game is just a Game Boy version of last year's Donkey Kong Country 2 for the Super NES. The only major thing that is different (except the graphics and sound, which are obviously worse, but good for Game Boy) is that the bonus areas in the stages are in different areas. If you liked the Super NES version, but want it on the go, then this game is for you.

Now, here is an upcoming Virtual Boy sequel:

Zero Racers

  • Original: F-Zero (Super NES)
  • Other Games: None
This game is more of a spin-off than a sequel, but it's the closest thing. Instead of having race cars, you have race planes. It uses wire-framed graphics, like those used in Red Alarm. It's supposed to be very fast. This game should be coming out either next month or November. When it's released, check it out.

This concludes today's Editorial. And boy, this one is long. Probably my longest one, yet.
