Game Boy Color in 1999

A lot of big Game Boy Color games were released last year (Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Tetris DX, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, and Quest For Camelot), but what's in store for GB Color gamers this year? A lot, to say the least: everything from color re-releases, NES ports, and brand-new games. This year will also be the first year for GB Color-ONLY games.

Last year there were only a few color re-released games:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
  • Tetris DX
  • Disney's/Pixar's A Bug's Life
This year, there are A BUNCH more. Take a look at this long list:
  • Wario Land II
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus
  • Kirby's Dream Land 2
  • Harvest Moon GB
  • Legend of the River King GB
  • Prince of Persia
  • Battleship
  • Jeopardy!
  • Wheel of Fortune
  • Monopoly
The first three on that list are from Nintendo, so you can bet that they'll be colorized very well. I don't know how enhanced the graphics are on the other games on the list, however.

This year, some companies will be releasing GB Color games that were originally released for the NES. Here's a list of the known games and their publishers:

  • Shadowgate Classic (Nintendo / Kemco)
  • Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo)
Just two games...right now. In the near future, however, more games will be announced. Keep checking the Game Boy Section news section for more information on these types of games.

New games include:

  • Conker's Pocket Tales
  • Pokémon Pinball
  • Pokémon/Yellow
  • Legend of the Sea King
  • Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle 3
  • NBA Jam '99
  • Smurfs Nightmare
  • Duke Nukem: Time to Kill
  • Top Gear Pocket
  • South Park
  • MLB Featuring Ken Griffey Jr.
  • San Francisco Rush
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
  • Space Station: Silicon Valley
And those make up only about half of them. Top Gear Pocket, San Francisco Rush, and NBA Jam '99 are among a few games that can only be played on Game Boy Color. These games will have much better graphics than other GB Color games. In fact, graphically, they'll look more like Sega Genesis games than NES games.

Nintendo has also made a hardware advancement for Game Boy Color games. It's a rumble-pak-like-device that is inside the GB Color cartridge. This way when the cartridge shakes, the GB Color system will shake too. Right now, the only two games to use this device (on KNP, it's referred to as the "rumble cart") are Pokémon Pinball, by Nintendo, and Top Gear Pocket, by Kemco.

Well, that's it for this editorial. Check out the next one in February.
