Nintendo's Rare Company

For three years now, Rare has been Nintendo's most important company. In November of 1994, Nintendo and Rare released Donkey Kong Country, which was the first Super NES game to use ACM (advanced computer modeling) graphics. That 16-bit game looked and played better than most 32-bit games.

In 1995, Nintendo and Rare went on to release Donkey Kong Land, the first ACM rendered game for Game Boy. Rare showed that ACM graphics could work with only four colors. That wowed people even more than Donkey Kong Country. Also in the same year, Rare made Killer Instinct for both the Super NES and Game Boy. Both games were versions of the arcade game from 1994. And don't forget Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, which was even more challenging than the first game. Rare also had one Virtual Boy game in the making, but Rare never finished it. It was GoldenEye 007, and was a driving/action game.

In 1996, Rare made Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run for the Super NES. This game also took advantage of ACM graphics. During the same year, Rare also made Donkey Kong Land 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. It was a Game Boy version of the Super NES game, with the same sub-title. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble was also released that year. To this date, it is the last Super NES game made by Rare. At the end of the year, Rare brought Killer Instinct Gold to the Nintendo 64. This game was an N64 version of the arcade game Killer Instinct 2 from earlier in the year.

Now, in 1997, Nintendo and Rare released Blast Corps, a unique demolition action game, and GoldenEye 007, a blockbuster hit based on the movie of the same name, for the Nintendo 64. Nintendo and Rare have also released Donkey Kong Land III, for Game Boy.

What's in store from Rare in the future? Well, coming very soon is Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo 64. That's the only game that will be coming out before the end of the year. But look for these great games in 1998: James Bond 007 for Game Boy, Conker's Quest for the Nintendo 64, Banjo-Kazooie for the Nintendo 64, and Donkey Kong Country 64 for the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive.

Remember that these are only Rare games that were made from 1994 to the present. Rare also made NES games, such as Battletoads. Also note that all Game Boy games mentioned above are also Super Game Boy enhanced.
