Where Are The RPG's?

What was the last really good RPG on any Nintendo system? Was it Lufia II, which was released about a year ago for the Super NES, or was it Super Mario RPG, which was released in May of last year? Some think that either Final Fantasy III or Chrono Trigger were the last greatest RPG's. But, which ever of those is the latest great RPG, no really good RPG's have been released this year for any Nintendo system.

This is one of the reasons why Sony and Square are doing so well with Final Fantasy VII. People are tired of waiting around for another great role-playing game that will be on any of the Nintendo systems (mainly the Nintendo 64). Am I going to switch to Sony because of this? No way. I am 100% loyal to Nintendo. However there are a bunch of people out there who don't feel the same as me. They WILL move to another system. But this editorial is not about people moving from Nintendo to Sony, it's about RPG's that are not being released this year on any Nintendo console.

Now, as you may or may not know, one role-playing game did actually come out for the Super NES this year: Harvest Moon. Although this game is considered an RPG/Simulation game, it still falls into the category of being a role-playing game. And since it is in that category, it is the only RPG that has been released this YEAR for any Nintendo system.

Now, what RPG's have you got to look forward to? (And, are any of them as good as a certain Square Soft game that just came out?) A bunch. And most of them will appear for the Nintendo 64. Here's a brief list of RPG and Adventure Games that are going to be released within the next year:

  • Castlevania 64 (N64)---Second Half 1998
  • EarthBound 64 (N64/64DD)---1998
  • Harvest Moon (GB)---Winter 1998
  • Hybrid Heaven (N64)---1998
  • The Legend of the Mystical Ninja 64 (N64)---January 1998
  • The Legend of Zelda 64 (N64)---April/May 1998
  • Quest 64 (N64)---First Half 1998
  • Quest For Camelot (GB)---Summer 1998
  • Super Mario RPG 2 (N64/64DD)---1998

Yeah, that's right. They're all coming out next year, starting in January. Can you wait a few months? Harvest Moon for Game Boy is the only one that might come out this year (December). But, no other game is likely to be released this year besides that game.

Now, which one is as good as the aforementioned Square game? I know that at least two of the games on that list will be just as good: The Legend of Zelda 64 and EarthBound 64. The only thing is, you have to be willing to wait for these two games. I will. And believe me, I really am looking forward to both of them. 1997 is almost over, and you can plainly see that this is not Nintendo's year for RPG's. Next year, however, RPG's will see the light of day as Nintendo releases a bunch of RPG's for the Nintendo 64 and a bunch of other companies release their RPG's, too.
