The Randolph's
First Generation
Bernard RANDOLPH born circa 1556, clothier, of Biddenden, Berkeley Hundred, County
Kent, England. He was buried in the chancel of Biddenden Church 6 May 1628 at the age
of seventy two years. He married 21 Aug 1587 to Jane BEDDENDEN (1571-1619), the
daughter of William Beddenden. (see Beddenden family)
Second Generation
The children of Bernard Randolph and Jane Beddenden included:
(1) William RANDOLPH born circa 1590, died 15 Dec 1641, Biddenden Church, Kent,
England. He married 1618 to Elizabeth CURTIS, daughter of Stephen Curtis of Tenterden.
(2) Bernard RANDOLPH
(3) John RANDOLPH born circa 1595. Immigrated to America and is considered to be the
"ancestor of Randolph's of that country."
(4) Herbert RANDOLPH born about 1600. He was educated at Biddenden School and St.
John's College, Cambridge. He died 8 Sep 1644. He married 27 Oct 1625 to Elizabeth
MASTER, daughter of Giles Master of Canterbury.
(5) Dr. Edmund RANDOLPH born 1601/2 St. George Parish, City of Canterbury, England.
He was educated at the University College, Oxford (B.A. 1619, M.A. 1622, M.B. 1626)
and Padua University (M.D. 1628). The Dean of Canterbury. His will was dated 8 Oct
1643, codicil 18 Oct 1643. He died in 1649 and is buried at St. George's. He married 12
Aug 1628 Canterbury St. Paul, Kent to Deborah MASTER, daughter of Giles Master and
Mary Hales. (see MASTER and HALES families)
Third Generation
Dr. Edmund Randolph and Deborah Master were the parents of:
(1) Edward RANDOLPH born 9 Jul 1632 St. Margaret, Canterbury, Kent, England
(2) William RANDOLPH, M.D. born circa 1637. He was educated at Wye School and St.
John's College, Cambridge.
(3) Mary RANDOLPH baptized 16 Apr 1639 Canterbury, St. George the Martyr, Kent,
England.
(4) Edward RANDOLPH, Esq. baptized 9 Jul 1632 St. Margaret Parish, Canterbury, Kent,
England. He was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge. He served as a government
agent in New England in 1676 and was captured by rebels in 1689 and sent back to
England. He was appointed Surveyor General of Customs, NY, MD and PA in 1691. He
died 1703 or 1724 in VA. He married (1) 1663 to Jane GIBBON, (2) Grace GRENVILL,
(3) Sarah Blackhouse Platt.
(5) Gyles RANDOLPH was baptized 8 May 1640 Canterbury, St. George the Martyr,
Kent, England. He settled in Norfolk Co., VA where he acquired considerable land
holdings by grant and purchase. He was commissioned by his brother Bernard Randolph
as Deputy Collector 26 Nov 1683 and died in Boston, MA the following year. He was
succeeded by his brother Bernard. Gyles married about 1668 to a woman named
Elizabeth.
(6) Jane RANDOLPH was baptized 10 May 1641 Canterbury, St. George the Martyr,
Kent, England.
(7) Joyce RANDOLPH was baptized 23 Sep 1642 Canterbury, St. George the Martyr,
Kent, England.
(8) Bernard RANDOLPH was baptized 20 Oct 1643 Canterbury, St. George the Martyr,
Kent, England. He was in Massachusetts in 1683 and returned to England in 1686.
(9) Elizabeth RANDOLPH
(10) Thomas RANDOLPH will dated 23 Jun 1659. Died 1661.

Fourth Generation
The children of Gyles and Elizabeth Randolph were:
(1) Elizabeth RANDOLPH baptized 12 Jul 1668 Dover St. Mary the Virgin, Kent,
England.
(2) Thomas RANDALL baptized 24 Jul 1672 Dover St. Mary.
(3) Gyles RANDOLPH Jr. baptized 25 Mar 1674 Dover St. Mary the Virgin, Kent,
England. In 1694 William Powell and Giles Randall signed an agreement in probate court
to equally divide an earlier purchase of 300 acres of land bought from George Newton in
Norfolk Co., VA. His will was made 1 Sep 1724 and proved 15 Jan 1724/5 Norfolk Co.,
VA. He married to Mary BLANCH, the daughter of Thomas Blanch and Elizabeth
ETHERIDGE (see BLANCH and ETHERIDGE families)
(4) William RANDOLPH baptized 5 Sept 1675 Dover St. Mary the Virgin, Kent, England.
Fifth Generation
The children of Gyles Randolph and Mary Blanch were:
(1) Ann RANDOLPH who married to Mr. CUTERALES (Cuthrell, Cutherill, Cutherall).
She inherited her father's plantation and land on the West Run after her mother died.
(2) Giles RANDOLPH born about 1688. He inherited his father's land on the north side of
the West Run where he was living when his father died. A deed of July 1720 Norfolk Co.,
VA from Giles Randol and wife Jane to James Wilson, the elder, of Norfolk. Giles gave a
deposition 21 Feb 1723 in which he gives his age as "35 years or thereabouts." His will
was made 7 Sep 1750 and proved 18 Oct 1750 Elizabeth Parish, Norfolk Co., VA. His wife
is said to have been Jane WILSON.
(3) William RANDOLPH inherited 200 acres on the south side of the North West River.
(4) John RANDOLPH inherited 130 acres on the North West River.
(5) Female married to Mr. Mercer. Their daughter Sarah Mercer inherited a feather bird
from her grandfather.
Sixth Generation
Giles Randolph and Jane Wilson were the parents of:
(1) Thomas RANDOLPH born abut 1720 Princess Anne Co., VA. He inherited a
plantation and 100 acres of land from his father. His will made 24 Dec 1787 Norfolk Co.,
VA, proved 19 June 1788. He married to a woman named Rachel who died about 1790 in
Norfolk Co., VA.
(2) James RANDOLPH born about 1728 Norfolk Co., VA. In inherited 100 acres of land
in Princess Anne Co., VA from his father. The will of James was made 2 Mar 1757 and
proved 19 Apr 1757. He was married to a woman named Mary.
(3) Willis RANDOLPH also inherited 100 acres in Princess Anne Co., VA from his father.
He died intestate Mar 1767 Princess Anne Co., VA. He married to Mary whose surname
may have been Fentress. Her will was probated 8 Dec 1785 in Princess Anne Co., VA.
(4) Giles RANDOLPH inherited his father's house, plantation and water mill after his
mother's death. He died 3 Mar 1792 Northampton Co., NC. He married to an unknown
woman.
(5) Solomon RANDOLPH inherited 100 acres from his father on Pockoyty Road. His will
was dated 19 Apr 1754 and proved Jun 1754 Norfolk Co., VA. He was married to a woman
named Elizabeth.
(6) Martha RANDOLPH married to Solomon HODGES.
Seventh Generation
Willis RANDOLPH and Mary were the parents of:
(1) Willis RANDOLPH Jr. boarded with John Fentress from 1767 to 1770 and with Joshua
Hopkins from 1770-1773. He was not named in his mother's will. He married 14 Mar 1785
Norfolk Co., VA to Prudence White and they moved to Pitt Co., NC as early as 1787.
(2) Willoughby RANDOLPH was born about 1753. He boarded with John Fentress from
1767-1770 and with Joshua Hopkins from 1770-1773. He is named in the will of Mary
Randolph in 1785. He was married 23 Dec 1791 Princess Ann Co., VA to Frances
THORNTON (see THORNTON family) They resided in Princess Anne Co., VA until
about 1797 when they moved to Surry Co., NC. They moved to Lee Co., VA by 1806 when
Willoughby begins to appear on the tax lists of that county. His will was made 16 Feb
1822
Lee Co., VA. He is buried on a farm he owned east of Longfield, Lee Co., VA.
(3) Elizabeth "Freelove" RANDOLPH boarded with Joshua Hopkins. Her will was made
29 Nov 1789 and proved 3 Oct 1791 Princess Anne Co., VA. She married to a Mr.
CANNON.
(4) Giles RANDOLPH named in the will of Mary Randolph in 1785. His will was made 3
Mar 1792 Northampton Co., NC and probated Jun 1792. He married to Lydia PHILPOTT
and Barsheba -----.
(5) Rachel RANDOLPH born after 1756. In 1774 she chose Joshua Hopkins as her
guardian. She was not named in the will of Mary Randolph in 1785.
(6) Jenet RANDOLPH born after 1749. In 1767 she chose Joshua Hopkins as her
guardian. She was not named in the will of Mary Randolph in 1785.
Eighth Generation
Willoughby Randolph and Frances Thornton were the parents of:
(1) William RANDOLPH born 4 Oct 1792 Princess Anne Co., VA. He moved from Lee
Co., VA to Macon Co., IL circa 1830/1. In 1856 he sold his farm and moved to Atlanta,
Logan Co., IL. He was residing in 1862 in Bloomington, McClean Co., IL. He died 26 Feb
1867 Lincoln, Logan Co., IL at the age of 74 years. He married about 1814 in Lee Co., VA
to Matilda KEARNS (Carnes) (1797-1863). William and Matilda are buried in the
Evergreen Cemetery, Bloomington, IL.
(2) Freelove RANDOLPH was born 1794/5 Princess Anne Co., VA. She died 28 Jan 1882
Lee Co., VA. She married 1808 at age 13 Lee Co., VA to Francis A. MUNCY (1788-1864).
(3) Thornton RANDOLPH was born about 1797 Surry Co., NC. He married before 1829 to
Mary BALDWIN.
(4) Mary Elizabeth RANDOLPH was born 16 Apr 1799 Surry Co., NC. She died 14 Aug
1893 Jonesville, Lee Co., VA. She is buried in the family cemetery near Fletch Ford on
Powell River, Lee Co., VA. She married 17 Aug 1812 Jonesville, Lee Co., VA to John
Goldsmith FLETCHER (1792-1879). They moved to Illinois briefly with William Randolph
in 1830/1 but became discouraged by the bitter winter and returned to VA.
(5) Sarah RANDOLPH born about 1801 Surry Co., NC. She died 30 Aug 1879 Lee Co.,
VA. She married circa 1816 to Cornelius FITTS (1798-1865).
(6) Willoughby RANDOLPH Jr. born about 1803/4. He married to Mary Vandeventer.
(7) James RANDOLPH born 8 May 1806 Lee Co., VA. He died 1 Nov 1852 Lincoln,
Logan Co., IL. He married 29 Aug 1824 Lee Co., VA to Nancy Maria WOODWARD
(1807-1878).
(8) Brooks RANDOLPH born about 1808 Lee Co., VA. He married first to a woman
named Susannah and second 9 Sep 1847 Dewitt Co., IL to Elizabeth SIMONSON.
Ninth Generation
William Randolph and Matilda Kearns were the parents of thirteen children:
(1) Levi RANDOLPH born about 1815 Lee Co., VA. Died 13 May 1832 IL.
(2) Love RANDOLPH born 4 Oct 1816 Lee Co., VA. Died Oct 1880 near Mapleton,
Bourbon Co., KS. She married 30 Sep 1847 Dewitt Co., IL to William T. ALLSUP
(1824-1886). (see ALLSUP family).
(3) Mary "Polly" RANDOLPH born 16 Oct 1818 Lee Co., VA. Died 28 Nov 1885
Kenney, IL. Buried Randolph Cemetery, Dewitt Co., IL. She married first 13 Oct 1828 to
George E. DAUGHERTY (1813-1836); second 11 Feb 1844 Dewitt Co., IL to Peter
COPPENBARGER (1817-1847); third 23 Oct 1851 to Henry H. BURTON.
(4) Willoughby Harrison RANDOLPH born 1 Aug 1820 Lee Co., VA. Died 18 Nov 1899
Logan Co., IL. Buried Randolph Cemetery, Dewitt Co., IL. He married 11 Sep 1845 to
Lou(v)isa BARR (1827-1916).
(5) Sarah RANDOLPH born 23 Feb 1822 Lee Co., VA. Died 19 Mar 1862. Buried
Randolph Cemetery, Dewitt Co., IL. She married 28 Feb 1841 Dewitt Co., IL to John H.
REGAN (1816-1870).
(6) William RANDOLPH born circa 1825 Lee Co., VA. He died 31 Jan 1857 Atlanta,
Logan Co., IL. He was unmarried.
(7) Josiah RANDOLPH was born circa 1826 Lee Co., VA. He died 28 Dec 1849 at New
Orleans, LA.
(8) Jehu (John) H. RANDOLPH was born 7 Jan 1828 Lee Co., VA. Died Apr 1901 Logan
Co., IL. He is buried in the Randolph Cemetery, Dewitt Co., IL. He married 8 Sep 1853
Dewitt Co., IL to Margaret J. WALLACE.
(9) Mary A. RANDOLPH born 1829 Lee Co., VA.
(10) Salina RANDOLPH born 1831 IL. She married to Noah M. SMITH.
(11) Matilda RANDOLPH born 1833 IL. Died 8 Mar 1898 Devine, TX. She married 31
Jan 1855 Dewitt Co., IL to Charles B. HUKILL.
(12) Moses M.C. RANDOLPH born 1835 IL. He was a Baptist preacher and was killed
during the Civil War 7 Dec 1862.
(13) Louisa RANDOLPH born 1838 or 1841 Logan Co., IL. She died 13 Jun 1861
Bloomington, McClean Co., IL. She married 19 Mar 1859 to Dr. Joseph N. SMITH.
(14) Adoniram Judson RANDOLPH was born 8 Jul 1839 IL. He married about 1864 to
Margaret E. MORRIS.
