Computers have made foray into the libraries world over. Almost all the operations in a library can be computerised to achieve more effective functioning. Library automation has been an area of specialisation of INSDOC for many years now. Several projects for the automation and modernisation of libraries of prestigious institutions have been taken up and successfully completed by INSDOC. In many cases, INSDOC's library automation package, Granthalaya has been used to meet the computerisation requirements of libraries and information centres.

Granthalaya is a state-of-the-art library automation package designed and developed by a unique blend of expertise at INSDOC - the software engineers and the library professionals. The package has been designed using an object oriented approach and uses a directory concept that facilitates easy data input and brings about better data integrity. The package uses a modular design that offers flexibility for libraries to go in for selective automation. Granthalaya can also be customised to meet a library's special functional needs. The package is available on platforms like DOS, Windows 95 and Windows 98.

In addition to its sophisticated features, its user friendliness and cost-effectiveness make Granthalaya almost the best available library automation package in the country today.

EASE OF USE The package is easy to learn and use. It offers pick lists and help texts at different levels and provides on-screen messages to help users. These features ensure userfriendlyness and reduce training time. No prior programming background is needed to operate and fully exploit this package
DIRECTORY CONCEPTS Directory facility is provided for data elements which are common and frequently used namely publishers, keywords, accompanying material etc. Facilitates saving of disk space, uniformity in the used terms and ensures high level of data integrtiy and input accuracy.
MODULARITY The package comprises seven modules designed to handle all functions of all types of libraries regardless of their size. Modularity imparts flexibility in the implementation of library automation. Takes care of collection development, data and library administration, circulation, query, serial control and other activities. Each module being standalone can be acquired depending upon the requirements and integrated with the existing module(s).
POWERFUL SEACRH FACILITIES Granthalaya is provided with sophisticated tools for retrieval of information through various search parameters. Multiple keywords and heading serches can be executed using boolean logic. A user can also query information by selecting parameters through directories or simply through string search facility.
In view of latest developments in software engineering, Granthalaya has been developed based on object-oriented analysis and design which offers qualitatively superior end product. This design also ensures upgradability with evolving requirements.
CCF COMPATIBILTY Granthalaya adopts Common Communication Format to promote standardisation. Incorporates all mandatory fields of CCF which facilitates import/export of data from Granthalaya to various platforms, resource sharing and data interchange amongst libraries and information centres.

DATA MANAGEMENT This module allows data entry for monographs, conference proceedings, reports etc., creation of directories and data editing. The module provides different work sheets for different document types.
CATALOGUE ACCESS Query option allows fast and accurate retrieval of data through various access points like author, title, keyword, publisher etc. The data can be retrieved either through the directory, where the user need not type out the query or through string search which permits the user to search on any part of the parameter string.
CIRCULATION Allows front desk operations like issuing, returning and reservations. You can generate different reports based on circulation statistics and can design your own circulation rules.
ACQUISITION This module takes care of all the operations involed in acquisition of monographs, conference proceedings, reports etc. from receipts of these documnets for approval to the accessioning.
SERIALS CONTROL Serials acquisition, serials monitoring and serials queries based on search parameters like serial name, publisher etc. is available. Complete binding management with prompting for serials ready for binding facility available. Automatic reminder generation and vendor performance analysis are the hilighted features.
LIBRARY ADMINISTRATION Allows rules and regulations of the library, layout plan/guide to resources, financial management, budgets and accounts (separate heads or combined), personnel management, inventory control and stock verification.
TECHNICAL PROCESSING This module facilitates computer-assisted allocation of UDC numbers to the documents. This feature not only speeds up documents proceesing but also helps staff not having adequate training to take up this task. In addition, uniformity is maintained in assigning a class number.
