Bass- Many experienced fishermen consider Monroe to be quickly becoming one of the top five Bass lakes in the state of Indiana. There are several reasons for this. The first official indication of this was the 1996 electroshocking survey conducted by fisheries biologists that suggested that 23 percent of the largemouth bass sampled exceeded the 14-inch minimum size limit. These growth rates are contributed mainly to the strong forage base of shad.
While the introduction of shad in some of the state's lakes have had a negative effect on bass growth (Patoka has been thrown into this category by some), the bass at Monroe seem to eat up all the shad they can find, thus offering larger catches.
Bass averages at Monroe tournaments are around 7 to 9 pounds. General consensus has the best bassin' on the east end of Monroe (the idle side of the lake near SR 446.)This area is popular because it is filled with stumps, old roadbeds, grassflats and creek channels. The east end offers plenty of shallow water, producing lotus pads that bass love.
Fishing on the west side of the SR 446 causeway will see the most success in the dense weed patches of The Ramp Creek area, as well as Sugar Creek, north of the dam.
Catfish- The best time to hunt for cats this summer is going to be at night (surprise!). That's when the channel cats are going to come up from the deeper waters to feed. While Monroe isn't necessarily one of the "top" channel cat lakes in the state, it does have a loyal following of anglers who know they're not going to be disappointed after a night of catfishin' on Monroe.
