The Environment
Young children learn best through play. I believe that children need an environment where Play is the base for learning. Play is the acquisition of knowledge through hands on, active involvement in the environment. Play is an essential part of normal child cognitive development. It is necessary for play to be fostered in a child-centered atmosphere where children are free to explore and discover. Children need safe, secure and stimulating surroundings where experimentation and hands on task promote discovery. The learning environment of a young child is one that is developmentally appropriate. It is one that fosters the development of the five selves - physical, social, emotional, cognitive and affective-.
Role of the Teacher
As a teacher my role is to facilitate discussion and investigation. Teachers need to work with children individually or in small groups listening asking questions and helping them to find answers. Teachers should be constantly assessing children's skills and identifying their needs. Teachers need to be there to redirect and guide children, teaching appropriate life skills. Children need to be given honest feedback and encouragement in their accomplishments. Teachers are responsible for the safety of the children while in their care. Children's creature comforts need to be met before they are able to learn. Teachers need to ensure that these needs of the children in their classroom are met.
Role of the School
The role of the school is to ensure that the teachers have the freedom to build a curriculum that meets the needs of each individual child. The school also needs to have an open door policy and encourages parents participate in center activities. A school should welcome and urge parents to observe and ask questions.
