Pete@Wimbledon
Pete has had tremendous success at Wimbledon in the past. This year he is seeking
his fifth championship in six years. He has a grand total of ten grandslams, which means that
four of them, almost half, have come from Wimbledon!
He is the favorite to win this year too, even though it appears he has been struggling with burn
out, and he was awarded the #1 seed in Wimbledon. His draw is not very easy, though.
Here is a look at who Pete could POSSIBLY play in the '98 Wimbledon-
Round 1-Dominic Hrbaty; ranked #47, had a Five set match with Pete in the '97 Australian.
Round 2-MaliVai Washington; Wimbledon runner-up in '96
Round 3-Thomas Enqvist; anyone who watches men's tennis knows how tough Thomas is.
Round 4-Scott Draper; winner at Queen's, a warm-up tournament for Wimbledon.
Quarters-Philippoussis, who beat Kafelnikov in the first round of Wimbledon this year.
Semis-Possibly Korda or Rafter, both dangerous players. Korda has had a good record with Pete, and Rafter has
a good serve-and-volley game for the grass courts.
Finals-Marcelo Rios, the current world's #2 or Greg Rusedski, a Brit with an awesome serve.
CURRENT RESULTS
Round 1-Pete won over Hrbaty with a score of 6-3,6-3,6-2. Pete had 17 aces and only 8 double faults.
Round 2-Pete advances with a win over Tillstrom in straight sets. Pete pretty much cruised in this match
(surprise? i think not!).
Round 3-Pete beats Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 7-6, 7-6 while serving up 29 aces!
Round 4-Pete advances, overcoming 20 year old Sebastian Grosjean, ranked #117 who made into Wimbledon as a qualifier. Pete had
14 aces this match, and now faces Philippoussis in the Quarters.
Quarters-Pete overcomes Mark Philippoussis with a straight set 7-6,6-4,6-4 victory.
Semis-Pete beat the hometown favorite, Tim Henman with a score of 6-3,4-6,7-5,6-3. Pete had 16 aces and he now
plays Goran Ivanisevic who beat the '96 champ Richard Krajicek in five sets.
FINALS-PETE WINS WIMBLEDON! This was a very close, five set match that could have gone either way. The score was 6-7,7-6,6-4,3-6,6-2.
Goran played really well, and his serve was awesome. If you watched the match, you could see the heartbreak in Ivanisevic's face after the
match which almost made me wish he would've won. This was Goran's third Wimbledon final, and he still hasn't won one yet, but watch out in
the future cause this guy is tough. I am confident that Ivanisevic will win a Grand Slam before his strong career comes to a close. After all,
he is still young, 26 just like Sampras.
