Steve Alford

Steve Alford is a 6'2" guard from New Castle, Indiana. He went to New Castle High School, where he played for his father, Sam Alford. He scored 2116 points in his career in high school. Scored 57 points against Broad Ripple in the semi-state. He shot 94.5% from the free throw line in 1983. He was named the Mr. Basketball of 1983 and also the National Player of the year. He decided to go to Indiana University to play for Bob Knight.

At IU in Steve led the Hoosiers in scoring all four years he was there. Also was named the Indiana MVP each of those years.. He also was named the Big Ten Freshman of the year in 1984. He was named 1st team All Big Ten in 1984. He was the Big Ten MVP in 1987. In 1986 and 87 he was on the All-American 1st team. In 1985, 1986, and 1987 he was first team all big ten. Currently he is number 2 on the IU all time scoring list with 2438. Alford was also fortunate enough to play on the 1984 Olympic team coached by Bob Knight, that won gold. He also played 4 years in the NBA. Now he is the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, before taking over the Iowa program in 2000 he was the coach at Southwest Missouri State, and before that Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana.
