The Island by the Dam It's about nothing, really. The developer of GoldenEye, Rare, initially wanted to let players leave the docks to access a small island in level 1 of the popular game – but like so many things, the idea eventually fell under the table. Rare took the feature out, but left the island in and thought it had heard the last of that little island with the two towers… But curious gamers armed with sniper rifles spotted the island by zooming in on the horizon, and it drove them nuts trying to figure out ways to get there. Up to this day, we receive at least five letters a day asking what the island is for -- and no matter how many times we answer it, they just won't stop. Well, we won't take it anymore. Here's how to get to the island: Unfortunately, you won't be able to get there without the use of the GameShark, InterAct's ingenious little cheat device (available in stores). Select "GoldenEye" from the cheat menu, then enter the following three codes:
D0064F31 0030 Now save the code, select it, and enter the game. Start level 1 (Dam) and make your way to the last dock at the right bottom of the dam. Go to the far edge and press the R and L buttons at the same time. You will now be in the water. Walk toward the far horizon (zooming in with the sniper rifle, you can see the island). It's easy to get stuck here, so move slightly right (C-Right) while moving forward. If you're doing everything correctly, you will eventually arrive at the island. All you can do here is check out the gun tower to the left and the watch tower to the right. That's it. Nothing to see here. Move along, move along. And don't let us ever catch you ask about that island again. Chemistry Set in the Gasplant Another cursed Rare joke that seems to bug gamers with no end. All there is to it, is this: There is a chemistry set in the ducts in the gasplant level. You can shoot it. It breaks. Just a little something for you to discover and pat yourself on the back. The Mysterious Cheat Slot (Line Mode) You've gotten all the cheats by beating all the levels in record times, but there is that one annoying open slot in the cheat menu that just bugs the hell out of you? What happened to the cheat? The truth is that Rare either didn't put the cheat into the final version of GoldenEye, or took it out after it caused problems. However, if you happen to have a GameShark, you can access a Line Mode, slumbering somewhere in the cart's code jungle: 80069657 0001 will unlock the Line Mode (it's similar to Turok's). Everything will be displayed with black wireframes on a white background. Yeech. Classic Bonds Rare originally wanted to include the classic Bond actors as polygon models in the multiplayer mode, but had to take them out due to licensing issues. Actually, some promotional videos in game stores and early screen-shots still show the "other Bonds" in their tuxedos. However, they have been taken out. Well, almost. The good news is that the pictures for the player select screen are still in there -- you need a GameShark to access them, though. A002B19B 0001 for Roger Moore A002B19B 0002 for Timothy Dalton A002B19B 0003 for Sean Connery Buy a Her Majesty's Secret Service (the video tape), cut out the picture of Bond on the cover and glue it to your screen to get George Lazenby. That would have never happened to the other ones... However, you can't really play as any of the classic Bonds. Any codes you read on the Internet or in certain magazines (thanks a lot, folks) are bogus. Quit sending them in. Hidden Weapons
The Tazer
The Spyder
Alternate Sniper Gun
The Paintbrush
Proximity Mines Oddjob and Mayday The two Bond villains from Goldfinger and View to a Kill are not in the one-player mode. You can only play them in the multiplayer modes. James Bond Will Return Despite what conclusions most people draw from the ending credits in GoldenEye, Rare is reportedly NOT working on another Bond game. While this is unfortunate (and it doesn't help that MGM has no intentions to bring Tomorrow Never Dies to the N64, either), remember that the GoldenEye team is working on another hot-looking title, using an improved version of the GoldenEye engine. That game, of course, is called Perfect Dark. Check out our Games section for a hands-on description of what Perfect Dark is all about. Hopefully, this answered all your questions and cleared up some of the nagging secrets that bug all you snipers out there. Oh, and Rare: Please don't put any glass into the ducts or leave gaps in the menus in Perfect Dark, or we will blow up every crumpit factory in Twycross and lock your local pubs. |
