A surprise for his grandmother

By Megan Marie Irvin

10/31/98

"Rollie, when we see her, you gonna say nothing...... about you know...." Angie asked the tall man sitting next to her, on the plane.

"Nope. Not at first." Rollie replied, with his eyes closed, head leaned back against the seat. He and Angie were on their way to Queensland, Australia. They had already been in Sydney doing a movie. Once the movie finished they had decided to go on and visit Rollie's grandmother. It had been a little over a year since the older woman visited the two younger people in New York.

At that moment a voice came over the intercom, instructing everyone to fasten their seat belts. Five minutes later they landed at the Queensland air strip.

"Does she know we're coming?" Angie asked, realizing Rollie never told her, as they grabbed their luggage.

"Nah. I decided we might surprise her." He replied, balancing the luggage in his arms.

----------

"This is it?" Angie stared out of the passenger window of the road rover Rollie had rented. They had driven about forty-five minutes from the airport, getting to a fairly deserted area. Now they cane upon a two story house, with a wrap around porch. There was a small flower bed, growing around the bottom of the porch.

"Yep. This is it. Lovely isn't it?" Rollie replied, coming to a stop in front of the house, turning the engine off. As he stepped out of the truck he was greeted by two dogs. One was a dingo. And the other was a Blue Heeler. "Hello, fellows."

"Who's out there?" A voice from the house asked, loudly. A little old lady, came out of the house, wearing a printed summer dress and a blue apron. "Roland!"

"Grandmum!" Rollie replied, looking up at the porch, as the small woman walked towards him, quickly and smiling.

"Oh! You should've told me you were coming!" She said, giving him a big hug.

"Yeah, well, we wanted it to be a surprise." Rollie answered, his grandmother turning around, realizing Angie was with them.

"And I see you bought Angela with you." The older woman said to Rollie in a whisper, smiling at him. "You two married yet?"

"Grandma! No, we are not." Rollie told her, sternly, giving Angie a secret smile.

"Well, I still have hope." Rollie's grandmother told him, walking over and giving the younger woman a hug.

"So, how have you been, dear?" She asked, leading Angie into the house, leaving Rollie behind to unload the luggage.

-------------

Like when Rollie's grandmother had visited him a year ago, Rollie was totally ignored. After the Aussie was sent out for grocery's, he was banished to the living room, with a beer, as the two women sat in the kitchen. He had no idea what they were doing, but was getting worried when he kept hearing them laugh and every time he went to see what was going on they would get quiet.

"How's the movies going, Rollie?" The older woman asked, as dinner time, heaping more mashed potatoes on her grandson's plate. She always thought he was too skinny.

"Good, grandma." He replied, rolling his eyes, at the food she continued to pour onto his plate. "We just came from finishing a movie in Sydney."

"Yes, Angie, here, told me already." She replied, smiling at the younger woman sitting on the right side of the table.

"What else have you been up to, besides making movies?" The grandmother asked.

"A little of everything. Helping the cops, that kind of stuff." Rollie replied.

"You know, Roland I don't like it when you help the cops." She told him.

"I know, grandmum. I get enough of it from Angie," He said, pointing his fork across the table at the young blonde.

"Well she has plenty of reason for not liking it. Too dangerous." The older woman said, taking a bite of her chicken.

"Yes, grandma." He said, nodding his head. For some reason she had no problems with him doing FX. He knew she knew it could be dangerous too. But when it came to helping the cops she was just as against it as Angie. But he had to admit he didn't blame them. But he also couldn't give it up. "So, tell us, what have you been up to lately? Dingo drop by recently?"

"I haven't seen that no-good-at-all father of yours since he told me you two weren't really married." She replied. "Mangela's actually been around a few times."

"Oh?"

"Yes. In fact he just left the day before yesterday." His grandmother told Rollie.

"Well, maybe we'll stop by and see him before we head home." Rollie told the older woman, finishing what was on his plate, and quickly stood up, taking his plate to the kitchen before his grandmother could put anymore food on it.

----------

Later that evening Angie and Rollie were sitting outside on the porch.

"What if your grandmum is up and sees us? I thought you wanted to keep this surprise for awhile." Angie said, as she and Rollie sat side by side on a step and he had his arm wrapped around her waist.

"She's in bed. I saw her go up there before we came out here." Rollie replied.

"Okay, but if she sees us it isn't my fault. I warned you." Angie said, as they kissed.

-------

The older woman, moved away from the living room window, the curtain falling back in place. She started up the stair smiling at what she just saw and heard. 'That boy thinks he can keep anything from me in my own house. I'll show him,' She thought, thinking up a plan.

------

"So, you and Rollie did take my advice and are dating aren't you?" Rollie's grandmother asked Angie the next morning at breakfast. Rollie was still sleeping.

"What? How.....????" Angie stuttered, staring at the older woman.

"Last night. I heard and saw you too outside. Everything including the kiss." She replied, smiling.

"I told Rollie...." Angie said, shaking her head, eyes closed.

"That boy either thinks he's invisible or I'm deaf. And neither are true." The grandmother told her the younger woman.

"You sound like you have something planned against Rollie?" Angie asked.

"I do. But I'm gonna need your help with it."

"Whatever it is you got it."

"Good, now this is what we're gonna do......." With that Angie and Rollie's grandmother set out on the plan against Rollie.

-------------

"You sure this is okay?" Angie asked the older woman, three days after her and Rollie's arrival.

"Oh it's just fine. Why wouldn't it be?" She replied smiling, as a knock came from the kitchen door.

"Jim, oh, come in." She said, letting in a man about Rollie's size, with blonde hair. "Angie, this is Jim Henderson. He's going to help us with our little scheme against Rollie."

"Hi." Jim said, shaking Angie's hand.

"Rollie'll be home any second from the store. Jim you know what to do?" The grandmother asked, quickly.

"Yes. Make him jealous and spill the beans to you, that you already know about." Jim replied, nodding his head.

"Good. Now you two go into the living room, and start acting chummy." The grandmother said standing up from the table. "I hear the him coming."

------------

Five minutes later Rollie came in carrying a bag of grocery's.

"I still don't see how you could be out of this stuff already, grandma. I just went to the store three days ago." Rollie said coming into the kitchen, sitting the bag on the table, hearing laughter coming from the living room.

"What's that?" Rollie asked. He recognized Angie's laughter but not the other. It sounded male.

"Oh, Angie and Jim." The older woman replied, unloading the page and keeping a straight face.

"Jim?" Rollie asked worried.

"Yes. A neighbor of mine. I thought since I couldn't get you and Angie together I'd do the next best thing." His grandmother told him.

"What?!" Rollie's eyes widen. "Grandma!!!!!"

"What? You have a problem with that?"

"Yes! Grandma, Angie and I are engaged to be married!" Rollie blurted out, sinking to a chair, as his grandmother turned around smiling.

"Oh?" She asked innocently, as Angie and a man with her stepped into the kitchen.

"Gotcha, Rol." Angie said, standing behind him, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"It's been fun but I should really get going now, Phyllis." Jim told the older woman walking towards the door.

"Yes, thanks, Jim. See you around." Rollie's grandmother told the man, walking back over to where Rollie still sat shocked.

"What is going on here?!" Rollie demanded, looking at his grandmother and Angie.

"You've just been tricked, Rollie, into telling your grandmother the truth about us." Angie told him, smiling, and laughing.

"I'm not as deaf as you might think Rollie. I was up the other night and heard you two talking on the porch. But I must say I had no idea you two were engaged. The best I got out of Angie was that you two were dating. When's the big day?" Rollie grandmother asked happily, looking at Angie, ignoring her still confused grandson.

"As soon as we fine Dingo. If we can't find him within a month, we're gonna go ahead and have the wedding." Angie answered.

"Well don't forget to invite me! I'm not gonna miss this for the world." His grandmother said, patting his grandson's hand. "So, what about grandchildren?"

"Grandma!" Rollie shouted, as he and Angie both looked at his grandmother eyes wide.
