A New Beginning: Hope

By Megan Marie Irvin

7/21/98

It had been a little over a year since Mable Tyler's birth. Mable was the
joy of her parents life. Rollie spoiled her completely. Angie was just glad
to see Rollie so happy. After all the hardships he had gone through in
life--his mum's death, his estranged relationship with his father, Dingo,
Rick's death, and Leo's death-- Angie was glad she and there daughter could
bring him some happiness.

Mable had light brown wavy hair, that already came past her shoulders, like
her father. She had green/blue eyes, like her mother. She was just as
curious about things as Rollie was. And she got into just as much trouble as
him.

-------

Rollie just finished setting up for the explosion scene for later that day,
on the current movie he and Angie were working on, "Fire Wars", as the
director called for lunch. Rollie had walked about 33 feet, on his way to
the FX van where Angie and Mable were, when he heard a noise behind him. He
turned around to find two of the eight-year-old extras messing with the
explosions he jsut set up. The very fragile explosions.

"Hey! You two get away from that!"  Rollie shouted, walking towards them.
The two boys quickly ran away, but it was to late.

-------

Angie looked up from her daughter, who was sitting on her mother's lap
giggling, when a explosion rocked the set. Picking up the baby, Angie ran
outside of the van. Her heart skipped a beat, as she saw Rollie laying
still, about 20 feet from where the explosion went off. "Rollie!" Spotting
Luce in a crowd of scared cast crew, who were running all over the place,
Angie handed her Mable, and ran towards her husband.

When she got to him, two of the stunt men and the director, were already at
Rollie's side.
Bill, the taller stunt man, got up and tried to keep her back, but Angie
kept fighting him.

"Bill, let her go. Angie, Rollie's still alive. A ambulance is on it's way."
The director spoke up, letting her take his place next to the unconscious
special effects man.

Part Two

An hour later, Angie was sitting in the waiting room with Mable on her lap
and Luce sitting in the chair next to her. Mira went to go get some coffee
and Francis went to call Sarah. The doctor was in with Rollie now. Rollie
had still not regained consciousness by the time they got him to the
hospital. But he was still alive. That's all that mattered to Angie at the
moment.

No one else had been seriously injured from the blast. Everyone was going to
get lunch, and not many people were around the explosive, and the few people
close to it jsut got a few scraps and scratches. The two boys who set it off
had ran fast enough, scared of Rollie catching them, so they were not hurt.

Angie looked down at her daughter. She had no clue as to what was going on
with her father. She didn't know anything was wrong. To her everything was
as it was the day before. Perfect. Mable was happily playing with the
stuffed kangaroo that Rollie had given her when she was born. That kangaroo
was Mable's favorite toy. She wouldn't go anywhere without it.

"Angie." Luce said pointing to the doctor approaching them.

"Mrs. Tyler?"

"Yes. Is Rollie going to be okay?" Angie asked standing up with Mable still
in her arms.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Tyler, it doesn't look to good at the moment. He's in
serious condition, and in a coma. Slight burns on his arms." The doctor told
the young woman. "If you want you can go see him. Your daughter will have to
stay here though."

"Thank you doctor." Angie replied, trying to stay calm, resting her cheek on
her daughter's head, her eyes closed.

"Angie? You want me to watch Mable while you go see Rollie?" Luce asked, her
arms reaching out for the baby.

"Sure Luce. Thanks. I'll be back soon." Angie replied, handing Mable over to
the actress.

"Take your time Ange."

Angie walked slowly into the room, a nurse showed her was Rollie's. She sat
down next to the bed Rollie was laying unconscious in. All that was making
noise in the room, was the beeping of the machine's the Aussie was hooked up
too. Closing her eyes for a minute to try to keep from crying, Angie took
hold of her husband's hand. He was so still. She didn't even see him this
still in his sleep. "Oh, Rollie, please be okay. Please wake up. I need you
to wake up. Your daughter needs you to wake up." Angie pleaded out loud.
"Rollie, Mable and i can't lose you, Please wake up."

Part Three

Angie stayed with Rollie for most of  the evening. There still was no
changes in his condition. When it got late, Francis offered to drive her and
Mable home. Angie didn't want to leave Rollie, but Luce, Mira, and Francis,
was able to convince her to go home, reminding her she had a daughter that
needed her.

"Do you want me to come pick you up in the morning and take you back t othe
hospital Angie?" Francis asked when they got back to the loft.

"No, Frank, it's okay. I'll drive myself. I'll be okay." Angie replied,
getting out of the car, with a sleeping Mable in her arms.

"I'm sure, Rollie will be jsut fine Angie." Francis told her.

"Thanks, Frank." Angie replied, smiling slightly. "Good night."

"Night, Angie, Mable." He said, pulling away.

Nearing, the doorsteps of the old converted brewery, Angie nearly had a
heart attack seeing a man sitting on the steps in a dark corner. To Angie,
he looked like he was asleep. As she got into the light, she calmed down a
bit, recognizing the man. "Dingo?!"

"Hmmmm? What?" The man mumbled waking up.

"Dingo, it's Angie. What are you doing here?" Angie asked, sifting Mable in
her arms, seeing she had woken up.

"Angie? Oh, I just came for a visit. No one was around when I stopped by. So
I went to visit a few friends. When I came bakc no one was here still. I
jsut decided to wait. I guess i fell asleep." Dingo told her standing up.
"Now don't tell me this is little Mable. She's gotten big since i last saw her."

"Dingo, the last time you saw your granddaughter was over a year ago, and
she was just a a few days old too." Angie replied, searching for her keys,
in her purse.

"Here, I'll take her." Dingo offered, noticing Angie was having a hard time
searching her purse and holding Mable at the same time.

"Thanks, Dingo." Angie replied, handing the baby over to the man.

Once they got into the loft, and Angie turned to take Marie from Dingo, she
saw the baby had fallen back to sleep. Carefully taking the baby, Angie took
her upstairs, and put her down for bed.

"Where's Rollie?" Dingo asked, sitting down on a chair across from the
couch, once Angie came back downstairs.

"Um.... Dingo, Rollie.....He's....." Angie started, not knowing how to tell
a father his son was in the hospital. Even though Dingo and Rollie were'nt
close, she knew they cared alot for the other.

"He's what?"

"Today on a movie set, there was an accident. One of the explosions went
off. Rollie was jsut a short distance away from it. He got hurt. Bad. He's
in the hospital now, in a coma. The doctor's say he isn't good." Angie told him.

Part Four

Dingo didn't really have time to say anything or react to what Angie told
him about his son, before the young woman collapsed into tears and into his
arms. He just sat in a daze, while holding Angie. After an unknown time, she
fell asleep. Her father-in-law a laid her out on the couch, covered her with
a blanket, and sat down on a chair across from the couch. He sat about an
hour worrying about his son before he also fell asleep.

In the morning, Dingo offered to watch Mable while Angie got ready to go to
the hospital. He sat in the kitchen, with Mable in her high chair, trying to
feed her some of her baby food. Which most of the peaches baby food got onto
him than into the baby's mouth.

"Now, your just doing it on purpose." Dingo said, as Mable stuck her hand in
the peaches jar and bringing up a handful of mashed peaches, she smashed it
against her grandfather's face, giggling.

"Did you get Mable to eat any of that?" Angie asked, coming down the stairs
seeing the mess that Mable and Dingo were making. Angie couldn't decide who
had the worse time feeding Mable her baby food, Rollie or Dingo.

"I'm pretty sure she ate some of it." Dingo replied, wiping the food off of
his face, as Angie lifted Mable out of her highchair. Within seconds, Angie
quickly handed Mable back over to Dingo, rushing up the stairs to the
bathroom, as she was hit with nausea.

"Angie?" Dingo called out, seeing his daughter-in-law rushing back up the
stairs, moving to the end of the stairs, still holding Mable, who was trying
to pull his short and thinning hair.

"Angie you okay?" Dingo asked as she came back down a few minutes later,
looking a little pale.

"I'm fine. Probably nothing." Angie told him, taking her daughter back. "You
ready to go now?"

"Yeah." Dingo replied, as Angie put Mable's coat on.

Part Five

When they got to the hospital Rollie still hadn't woken up. After going in
to see Rollie quick, Angie let Dingo go in and sit with Rollie for a bit.

As Dingo came back out and sat down next to Angie, he toook Mable out of her
arms. "You can go see him now. I'll wait out here with Mable."

"Why don't you two just go home. I don't know how long I'll be staying and
it's almost time for Mable's nap. You can take the car. I'll get a cab when
I'm ready to go." Angie told them, standing up. She was about to lean down
and place a kiss on her daughter's forehead, when she started getting
lightheaded and a little dissy. Before she knew what happened she blacked out.

-----------

Angie awoke, and after looking around she realized she was in a hospital room.

"Hey. How you doing angie?" Dingo asked, seeing she woke up.

"What happened? Where's Mable?" Angie asked.

"You fainted. And Mable is with Luciende, I called her after you passed
out." Dingo replied, as a doctor came into the room.

"Well, I see our patient has woken up." The doctor said, looking at her
charts. "I'm Dr. Lotus. How are you feeling?"

"Fine. I want to go see my husband." Angie said, sitting up.

"You can go see him, when I get done with you, Mrs. Tyler." Dr. Lotus told
her sternly, thne turned to Dingo. "Your gonig ot have to wait outside while
I look her over."

"I'll be right outside, Angie." Dingo said, geting up and leaving the room.

"This is ridiculous. I'm fine."Angie told the doctor.

"Well, if you fainted then something has to be wrong. Your father-in-law
told me you were nauseous this morning. Is that right?"

"Yeah." Angie replied. She really wnated ot be with Rollie than here.

"Did you feel nauseous before today, anytime?" She asked.

"No..... Well,  maybe once or twice this week." Angie told the doctor, as
she suddenly remembered something. "My husband did have me make a doctors
appointment. I think it's next Monday."

"Okay. Well, were going to run a few tests and see what we come up with."
The doctor told her.

Part Six

A few hours later, Angie was sitting next to Rollie. The doctor was done
with her. She had found out what made her dizzy and nauseous. How Angie
hadn't picked up on it before she wasn't sure. Maybe it had passed her mind
once or twice over the past week but with the movie and now Rollie getting
hurt, Angie forgot all about it.

Angie had to admit  this wasn't the greatest time for this to happen. Not
with the possibility of Rollie not getting better. If he didn't get better
now and left her now, Angie was going to kill him herself.

"Come on Rollie. You have to get better." Angie pleaded with her comatose
husband, holding one of his hands.

All she got as a reply was more beeping of the machines in the room.

"You leave me now I'll never forgive you."

Still nothing.

"Rollie, you can't leave me to raise two kids alone. I just can't do it."
Angie told him, leaning her head on the bed starting to cry.

Angie perked up, hearing a ever faint moan. She wasn't sure but she could've
sworn she saw his hand twitch.

"Rollie? Open your eyes please. I know you can do it." Angie pleaded with
him, brushing the the brown hair out of his eyes.

At that moment a nurse stepped in the room. "I'm sorry Mrs. Tyler, you're
going to have to leave now."

"Get a doctor. I think he's waking up." Angie told the nurse, not caring one
bit if it was time to leave or not.

Within minutes the doctor who had been taking care of Rollie stepped into
the room. "The nurse tells me you think he's waking up?"

"Yeah. He moaned and his hand twitched." Angie told him, standing up from
the chair she was sitting in, but still holding onto Rollie's hand.

"Why don't you step outside while I check your husband over." The doctor
told her, moving over to the side of the bed and as about to look at
Rollie's eyes.

"She's not going anywhere." A weak voice announced, shocking both Angie and
the doctor.

Part Seven

"Rollie!" Angie exclaimed, looking down to see her husband was now awake.

"Mr. Tyler, you had us all worried for awhile." The doctor said, starting to
examine Rollie, deciding not to push the issue about Mrs. Tyler leaving the
room.

Rollie and Angie both stayed quiet while the doctor finished his examination.

"Well, everything looks okay. We're gonig to run some tests just to make
sure. But those can wait till the morning." The doctor told them, as he and
the nurse left the room.

"Oh, Rollie."Angie said softly, looking at Rollie, over joyed that he woke
up. "Don't ever scare me like that again, please!"

"I'll try not to, Love. But you know me." Rollie replied, becoming his old
joking self.

"Yeah." She mumbled, shaking her head.

"How's Mable? Where is she?" Rollie asked, holding his wife's hand, as she
sat next to him on the bed.

"She's fine. She's sitting in the waiting room with Luce and Dingo." Angie
replied, leaning her head on Rollie's shoulder.

"Dingo?"

"Yeah, he showed up last night. Been watching Mable for me most of the day."
She replied. "Maybe I better go tell him your awake now."

"No, I'm sure the doctor or nurse told them." Rollie said, not wanting her
to leave.

"Okay." She said, giving Rollie a kiss on the lips.

"Hey, Angie?"

"Yeah?"

"There was something i heard you say. Right before I opened my eyes.
Something that got me confused. What did you mean when you said, you can't
raise two kids, alone? We only have one kid." He asked her, staring at her
face, trying to figure out what she meant. "Right?"

"Well, we technically have just one kid for seven more months." She told
him, raising her eyebrows and smiling innocently at Rollie. "I'm pregnant."

"What?! Pregnant?" Rollie croaked out, looking shocked.

"Yeah. The reason I wasn't feeling good this week. I just found out a few
hours ago myself." Angie told him, not sure how he felt about this. All she
saw from his face was pure shock. "Rollie?"

"Huh?"

"How do you feel about this? About me being pregnant again I mean." Angie
asked, slowly.

"Shocked. But besides that thilled." Rollie told her sincerely, wrapping a
arm around her shoulders and placing the other hand on her abdomen.

"Really?"

"Yes, really." Rollie replied, kissing her.

They were then interrupted from their embrace, when someone cleared their
throat. It was Dingo.

Rollie looked up at his father, smiling, and the first thing out of his
mouth was, "She's pregnant."

Epilogue

a month and a half later things were fairly back to normal. Rollie was
hundred percent better. And Angie was a little over three months pregnant
and already showing.

Dingo stayed a couple more weeks after Rollie woke up then like usual
disappeared.

"I hate this." Angie said, standing in front of a mirror, one morning, up in
the bed room, as Rollie came out of the shower just getting dressed.

"What?" Rollie asked, sitting on the bed and pulling on a cotton sweater
over a white T-shirt. "I thought you liked being pregnant."

Angie turned around looking at Rollie giving him a 'yeah right' look. "No,
what I hate is being so big. I mean I'm three months along, and already look
like I did when I was five months along with Mable."

"Well, maybe it's a boy." He replied, smiling, as Mable came by him, lifting
her arms up, which meant she wanted to be lifted up. He did so, sitting her
in his lap.

"In that case you can finish carrying this kid around till it's born." She
replied, taking Mable in her arms and walking down the stairs. Rollie sat on
the bed, not sure if she was kidding or really serious, even though him
doing that was impossible.

-------

After some breakfast, they dropped Mable off at Sarah Gatti's, who promised
to watch Mable, while Rollie and Angie went to a doctor's appointment. They
were having a sonogram that day. This time around they planned to find out
the gender of the baby.

"Hmmmmmm....... This is interesting." The doctor who was doing Angie's
sonogram said looking at the monitor closely.

"What? Something wrong?" Angie asked, clutching Rollie's hand, glancing up
at him then at the doctor.

"What is it?" Rollie asked the doctor, also worried.

"Oh, nothings wrong, Mr and Mrs Tyler." The doctor replied, smiling.

"Then what is it?" Rollie asked, confused.

"Your having Twins! A boy and a girl!"
